Pardon me while I get a little sarcastic for a moment…I’d like to
thank the organization for taking proactive steps to curb the losing
going on in Birmingham. The Barons mercifully have been out of town on a
ten game road trip, so I haven’t witnessed first hand the rebirth of a
winning attitude just yet.
I cannot complain about the addition of outfielder Buck Coats to the
roster. He is capable of being a .300 hitter in AAA, so that is the
least that should be expected of him at the AA level. He should provide
an extra stolen base threat as well. Power wise, I don’t expect but
maybe a handful of homeruns, but as long as he drives in runs, I’ll take
that. Plus, his name is Buck, that’s got to count for something. The
movie “Kill Bill” comes to mind all of the sudden. Does he drive a
yellow pick up truck? Coats was a Southern League All Star…in 2005.
Last year I heckled Montgomery infielder Fernando Cortez for returning
to the Southern League after 5 years, can’t do that with Coats though,
he’s a Baron.
Let’s hope new reliever Deunte Heath can meet some
nice ladies in Birmingham. I saved you the trouble of Googling that
cryptic comment. Seriously, Deunte? Heath should have some upside,
possibly as a swingman (pardon the pun). I’ll forgive the fact that he
got lit up in his first appearance considering he was facing
Jacksonville’s Mike Stanton, as well as coming in from extended spring
training. He is still only 24, so maybe a new beginning will benefit
not only him, but the organization. It’s a shame that we will miss out
on a good heckling opportunity again due to the fact that he’s on the
home team.
I guess I will have to remain patient until the second half when,
hopefully, the Barons will be restocked with players from the juggernaut
Dash roster. Normally, I’d be excited about the upcoming ten game
homestand, including a team autograph session before this Saturday’s
game. But alas, I’m not. It could be the new allergy I’ve developed
towards grass pollen, perhaps. It takes a lot for me to not be excited
about watching baseball. Something I could do 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week and 365 days a year. But when the best you can hope for is a 2-8
record, that’s pretty depressing. There’s no reason for me to be on the
Future Sox podcast, because there’s nothing to say. Oh well…at least
I have the Gordon Beckham bobblehead giveaway on June ??th to look
forward to. The cough medicine beckons! Until next time…
Cheers,
JPN
