FutureSox Draft Tracker 2012

Like usual, we have our draft tracker updated as the draft progresses and as players sign. We will fill it in with as much info on the picks as we can find. A full list of all teams’ selections can be found on MLB.com.
1 (13): Courtney Hawkins, OF, R/R, 6-3, 220, Carroll HS (TX) – SIGNED ($2,475,000; slot money)
1s (48): Keon Barnum, 1B, L/L, 6-5, 225, King HS (FL) – SIGNED ($950,000; under slot)

2 (76): Christopher Beck, RHP, 6-3, 225, Georgia Southern – SIGNED ($600,000; under slot)

3 (108): Joey DeMichele, 2B, L/R, 5-11, 188, Arizona State – SIGNED ($400,000; under slot)

4 (141): Brandon Brennan, RHP, 6-4, 220, Orange Coast CC (CA) – SIGNED ($320,800; slot)

Brennan has a fastball that sits around 90, but on a good day hits 93-94. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot and has had trouble consistently hitting his arm slot, which could explain the inconsistent velocity. He also has a slider, which has been described as inconsistent, and a change up.  Drafted 40th round out of high school in 2010, but opted to go to Oregon where he didn’t play. 108.1 IP, 1.25 ERA, 72 K, 23 BB, 76 H as starter this spring. Houston signee.
5 (171): Nick Basto, SS, R/R, 6-1, 180, Archbishop McCarthy HS (FL) – SIGNED ($250,000; over slot)

Basto comes from the nationally ranked Archbishop McCarthy High School program in Miami so he got plenty of looks from scouts. Baseball America mentions him as a possible third or second baseman in the future, but he’s listed as a shortstop for now. Average power and arm. Florida International signee.

6 (201): Kyle Hansen, RHP, 6-8, 215, St. John’s – SIGNED ($250,000; over slot)
Hansen matches the recent White Sox trend of taking tall pitchers. He is the brother of Craig, a former first round pick and current Major Leaguer. Kyle has a deceptive delivery, a good slider and a change up. He likely ends up as a reliever, a role he pitched in at the Cape Cod League. His plus fastball is in the low 90s, peaks at 96 with sink. Also throws a slider and a change up, but lack of quality in secondary pitches is why he projects as a reliever. 3.46 ERA, 108 K, 26 BB, 91 H in 93.2 IP as a starter this spring. Has been used as a starter all three years at St John’s, which is still in the NCAA Tournament.
7 (231): Jose Barraza, C, L/R, 6-1, 220, Sunnyside HS (CA) – SIGNED ($146,300; slot)

Barraza has a good arm and power potential. He may have to move to first, but as a high school pick (with no college commitment) he has the rare combination of left-handed power from behind the plate.
8 (261): Zach Isler, RHP, 6-4, 235, Cincinnati – SIGNED ($136,600; slot)

Isler is a reliever at Cincinnati. 55 IP, 2.78 ERA, 55 K, 26 BB, 50 H this season. Doubled his strike out rate this year from last year when he struck out 26 in 51 innings. Typically sits around 93-94 with his fastball, which has good sink. Decent 82-84 slider. The lack of control throughout his career is a problem, but the plus fastball makes him an interesting relief prospect.
9 (291): Micah Johnson, 2B, L/R, 5-11, 200, Indiana – SIGNED ($127,600; slot)

Johnson got a late start to this season due to elbow surgery and never got it going. As a sophomore he hit .335/.402/.474 with 19 stolen bases in 22 attempts. Good speed, patience and bat speed. Decent enough defender in the middle infield.

10 (321): Brandon Hardin, RHP, 6-0, 200, Delta State – SIGNED ($20,000; under slot)

Hardin is the first senior taken by the White Sox in this draft. He was the close for a Delta State team that was the national runner up in Division II. 1.03 ERA, 36 K, 9 BB, 20 H in 35 IP this year. Was used as a starter last year and had an ERA of 5.77.
11 (351): Eric Jaffe, RHP, 6-3, 220, UCLA – SIGNED ($100,000)
Jaffe is a draft eligible sophomore with big time stuff, but not the production to match. He walked 10 in 7.2 IP this season. Redshirted last year so he was technically a freshman this spring. Baseball America describes him as having a low 90s fastball and a power curve, but mental and control issues to overcome. Bruins still in NCAA Tournament.
12 (381): Zach Stoner, 1B, L/R, 6-3, 200, Boylan Catholic HS (IL) – SIGNED ($180,000)

The Rockford native is a Southern Illinois commit with his own website. Has played catcher in high school, but the Sox listed him as a first baseman so they probably don’t think he can stay there. Hit .461 with 4 HR and 44 RBI this season.
13 (411): Derek Thompson, LHP, 6-2, 170, John A. Logan JC (IL)
1.92 ERA, 103 K, 29 BB, 58 H in 84.1 IP this spring.
14 (441): Anthony Bucciferro, RHP, 6-3, 215, Michigan State – SIGNED
Four-year starter at Michigan State that holds school records. Upper 80s fastball, slider, change, curve. 111.1 IP, 3.07 ERA, 94 K, 22 BB, 105 H this season. Went to Minooka HS in Illinois.
15 (471): Jordan Guerrero, LHP, 6-3, Moorpark HS (CA) – SIGNED
Inconsistent fastball that has shown 85-88 at times and 92-93 at times. Throws a decent change up and a curve.
16 (501): Abe Ruiz, 1B, L/R, 6-3, 237, Arizona State – SIGNED
Ruiz hit .305/.389/.595 as a senior this spring. He played at ASU as a freshman and then transferred to Santa Barbara City College for a year before returning to the Sun Devils. Teammate of third round pick Joey DeMichele.
17 (531): Sammy Ayala, C, L/R, 6-2 195, La Jolla Country Day HS (CA) – SIGNED ($258,800)
Ayala looks like the first potential overslot pick taken by the White Sox. He’s in the top 200 draft prospects by Baseball America. He’s a three-sport athlete in high school that is viewed as a raw prospect. Decent defender for his age, but as with any high school catcher there’s a long way to go. Has some nice power potential. Was committed to UC Santa Barbara and was not expected to sign, but the Sox snagged him for fifth round money.

18 (561): Thomas McCarthy, 3B, R/R, 6-1, 205, Kentucky – SIGNED
Another college senior, McCarthy hit .310/.396/.455 this spring after being first-team SEC as a junior. He hit .371/.436/.581 last year after playing two years of JuCo ball.
19 (591): Alex Williams, 1B, L/R, 6-6, 260, Louisiana Tech – SIGNED
Williams’ big frame helps make him a big power hitter. He hit .332/.420/.548 with 12 HR as a senior this year. Four-year starter for La. Tech. His sophomore season was similar to this year, but his batting average dipped to .272 and he hit just four homers as a junior.
20 (621): Zach Voight, SS, R/R, 6-0, 185, New Mexico State – SIGNED
The college seniors continue to pile up. Voight hit .305/.394/.493 this spring. He spent two years at JuCo. Hit .327/.422/.434 at NMSU last year. Good patience and contact skills, but little power.
21 (651): Adam Lopez, RHP, 6-5, 221, VMI – SIGNED
Another senior, but this one sounds like a reclamation project. Lopez pitched four years at VMI, but went from a regular starter as a sophomore to being injured early in his junior year. He needed Tommy John Surgery after making just three appearances as a junior. He came back this year, but wasn’t used much. K/9 above 9 all four years, but production never matched. 8.40 ERA, 18 K, 9 BB in 15 IP this spring as a ‘starter’ and reliever.
22 (681): Cory McGinnis, RHP, 6-0, 190, Auburn Montgomery – SIGNED
McGinnis pitched at four colleges in four years and was drafted in the 44th round by the Pirates two years ago. 4.42 ERA, 65 K, 30 BB, 65 H in 71.1 IP this season.
23 (711): Kale Kiser, CF, S/R, 5-10, 185, Nebraska – SIGNED
Mediocre last two seasons at Nebraska after a very strong sophomore season. Hit .259/.435/.430 this spring, .273/.417/.366 last year and .345/.467/.476 as a soph. Always draws lots of walks, but doesn’t have much power.

24 (741): Eric Grabe, 2B, 5-10, 190, U Tampa – SIGNED
Grabe was a two-year starter for the Division II powerhouse. .320/.382/.480 this spring after hitting .379/.432/.564 last year. Also pitched as a junior.
25 (771): Storm Throne, RHP, 6-7, 215, Morningside College – SIGNED
The big junior has an awesome name and plays at a DII program in Iowa. 4.58 ERA, 61 K, 22 BB, 47 H in 55 IP. Also played basketball for Morningside.

26 (801): Zach Toney, LHP, 6-3, 230, Austin Peay – SIGNED
Just the third lefty pitcher taken by the Sox this draft. Toney was Austin Peay’s ace. 3.10 ERA, 86 K, 45 BB, 72 H in 93 IP this year.
27 (831): Zac Fisher, C, L/R, 6-3, 195, New Mexico State – SIGNED
A rare college junior selection. Fisher has been a three-year starter for the Aggies and hit .355/.432/.511 this year. The second NMSU Aggie taken by the Sox.
28 (861): James Hudelson, RHP, 6-4, 215, Delta State – SIGNED
Hudelson is a senior reliever with a 3.10 ERA, 26 K, 7 BB, 14 H in 20.1 IP. Spent two years at Jefferson College in Missouri before transferring to Mizzou for his junior year, where he was used sparingly. Teammate of 10th rounder Brandon Hardin.
29 (891): Jason Coats, LF, R/R, 6-2, 200, TCU
Coats was a hot prospect after his sophomore year where he set a school record with 99 hits. Hit .326/.377/.508 this spring. OPS over 1.000 as a sophomore with 13 home runs. A good Cape Cod League season the following summer made him a potential early round pick, but his junior year didn’t match the production (.825 OPS). Baltimore drafted him in the 12th round a year ago, but he went back to school and didn’t show much improvement. The Horned Frogs are still in NCAA Tournament, but Coats tore his right ACL in the final game of the regular season on May 20.
30 (921): Jake Brown, SS, L/R, 5-11, 185, Kansas State – SIGNED
A three-year starter and four-year player at Kansas State. Brown hit .261/.332/.310, which was about his career norm. Not much of a hitter in college, could wind up being a utility player in rookie ball with decent speed.
31 (951): Corey Thompson, 3B, R/R, 6-3, 210, East Carolina – SIGNED
First name is William, but goes by his middle name. Downward trend in batting average the last three years ( .377, .328, .315) and home runs (8, 6, 4). Yet another college senior (it’s beyond a trend at this point).
32 (981): Steven Nikorak, 3B, R/R, 6-2, 215, Temple – SIGNED
Nikorak was a redshirt senior for the Owls. Hit .302/.407/.502 this spring and also pitched throughout his career with mediocre results. OPS 1.025 last year with 11 homers.
33 (1011): Jon Savarise, LHP, 6-1, 205, Stevenson HS (IL)
Local kid from the North Suburbs of Chicago. Father, Terry, works for the White Sox. Not expected to sign, says he will attend Northern Illinois.
34 (1041): Ryan Castellanos, RHP, 6-3, 185, Archbishop McCarthy HS (FL)
Teammate of fifth rounder Nick Basto. Committed to Illinois.
35 (1071): Kyle Martin, RHP, 6-6, 195, Texas A&M
Martin, a college junior, was the Aggies’ closer this year (56.1 IP, 3.20 ERA, 52 K, 21 BB, 57 H). He was used as a high leverage reliever the last two years.

36 (1101): Mitch Patishall, RHP, 6-1, 185, Pendleton Heights HS (IN)
Perfect Game USA says he has an upper 80s fastball and is a commit to Cincinnati. Ranked as the ninth best senior in Indiana by PrepBaseballReport.com.
37 (1131): Thurman Hall, CF, R/R, 6-0, 190, Western Texas JC – SIGNED
The third Junior College pick of the draft for the White Sox and the first freshman. Hall hit .348 with 23 BB in 158 at-bats this spring.
38 (1161): DeJohn Suber, SS, R/R, 6-0, 150, Morgan Park HS (IL)
Suber is a product of the White Sox Academy in Chicago. Committed to John A. Logan JC
39 (1191): Mitch Glasser, 2B, R/R, 5-10, 180, Macalester College
The first college senior in seven rounds. Glasser is a Chicago native and graduate of the Latin School. He hit .325, his lowest batting average in four years, with 10 stolen bases for the DIII program in Minnesota this spring. Hit .408 with a 1.063 OPS as a junior.
40 (1221): Sam Mason, RHP, 6-0, 175, Beverly Hills HS (CA)
Mason had a 0.53 ERA this spring (I think). Also hit for Beverly Hills. He makes it 12 high school picks in the White Sox draft class.
