Current signing bonus pool
1 (17): Tim Anderson, SS, R/R, 6-1, 180, East Central CC (MS) [SIGNED, $2,164,000, slot, assigned to Kannapolis]
2 (55): Tyler Danish, RHP, 6-2, 190, Durant HS (FL) [SIGNED, $1,001,800, slot, Bristol]
3 (91): Jacob May, CF, S/R, 5-10, 180, Coastal Carolina [SIGNED, $525,000, under slot by $50,500, Great Falls]
May is another good athlete with good speed. He hit .324/.417/.495 as a junior for Coastal Carolina this spring. He’s not expected to be a power bat, but he did hit seven homers this season. He is a good defender thanks to his speed, but needs to refine that part of his game. May, 21, was 27/32 stolen bases as a sophomore and 16/26 as a junior. He is a leadoff type hitter. Coastal Carolina bio.
4 (123): Andrew Mitchell, RHP, 6-3, 205, TCU [SIGNED, $413,000, slot, Great Falls]
Mitchell matches the profile the Sox have taken among pitchers lately. He is a big, hard thrower. The 21-year-old has a fastball that sat around 90, but Jim Callis mentioned he has thrown 97 in front of scouts in shorter sessions. He has a plus breaking ball and sounds like a future reliever type. His control hasn’t been great. As a sophomore Mitchell had a 3.74 ERA with 101 K and 46 BB in 77 IP as a starter. This spring Mitchell made 10 starts and 10 relief appearances and turned in a 3.49 ERA with 57 K and 33 BB in 49 IP. TCU bio.
5 (153): Thaddius Lowry, RHP, 6-4, 215, Spring HS (TX) [SIGNED, $400,000, over slot by $90,800, Bristol]
Lowry hit 96 on his fastball early during the spring high school season, but his velocity faded to the upper 80s as the season wore on and more typically sits in the low 90s. He has a good breaking ball, but that also dropped late in the season. The hope is that he can build up strength and maintain that better stuff. Another pitcher with good size and velocity. Lowry also currently throws a splitter and a slider. Texas Tech commit.
6 (183): James Dykstra, RHP, 6-4, 200, Cal State San Marcos [SIGNED, $30,000, under slot by $201,500, Great Falls]
Dykstra is the first college senior taken by the Sox this draft. He is a big right-hander that throws hard, which makes three of those in a row. Dykstra had 86 K and 13 BB with a 2.02 ERA in 89 IP for the NAIA school this season. His college career began with a year at Yavapai JC in Arizona before transferring to LSU, where he spent the 2011 season as a reliever. He was a two-way prospect out of high school (outfielder), but focused on pitching his last three year of college. Dykstra was drafted in 2009 out of high school and the following year out of Yavapai. He is outside the Baseball America top 500 draft prospects. San Marcos bio.
7 (213): Trey Michalczewski, 3B, S/R, 6-3, 210, Jenks HS (OK) [SIGNED, $500,000, over slot by $326,400, Bristol]
Here’s the first signability pick. Michalczewski is an Oklahoma commit from the powerful Jenks High School program. He is a big infielder that played shortstop, second base and third base in high school, but the Sox drafted him as a third baseman. His size makes him project better at the hot corner. He was described a third round type talent by the MLB TV guys. Michalczewski has good bat speed and a good approach at the plate. He has good power potential and a strong arm to stick at third. He hit .449 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs as a senior according to this article.
8 (243): Chris Freudenberg, LHP, 6-3, 195, South Mountain CC (AZ) [SIGNED, $175,000, over slot by $21,000, Bristol]
The first lefty, but still a tall pitcher. Freudenberg turns 20 on June 19. He was at three colleges in two years, but still produced. His fastball usually sits in the upper 80s or low 90s. He also throws a curveball and a cutter. Freudenberg struck out 96 with 44 walks with a 2.72 ERA in 76 IP this spring.
9 (273): Nick Blount, RHP, 6-6, 230, Southern Polytechnic State (GA) [SIGNED, $10,000, under slot by $133,000, Great Falls]
This is probably the most obscure selection so far, but he fits the profile: big right-handed pitcher. Blount is a 22-year-old senior that began his career at Tennessee. In three years with the Volunteers, Blount had a 6.26 ERA with 58 K and 34 BB in 113.2 IP. He made 12 starts and 41 relief appearances in those three years. As a junior he had 20 K and 5 BB in 35 IP (4.63 ERA). That year he was the team’s closer, but got kicked off the team for violating team rules. He had 60 K against 10 BB with a 2.74 ERA in 42.2 IP while being used mostly as a reliever this year for his NAIA school.
10 (303): Bradley Goldberg, RHP, 6-4, 235, Ohio State [SIGNED, $10,000, under slot by $125,300, Great Falls]
Goldberg is another big pitcher with good velocity. He’s 23 and a fifth-year senior. Goldberg posted a 2.99 ERA in 15 starts with 68 K and 46 BB in 81.1 IP this spring. He began his college career at Coastal Carolina and transferred after two years, but had problems with credits transferring over so he had to sit out the 2011 and 2012 college seasons before suiting up for Ohio State. He posted a 7.94 ERA in just 5.2 innings as a sophomore with Coastal.
11 (333): Matt Ball, RHP, 6-5, 195, Bonita Vista HS (CA) [SIGNED, $150,000, over limit by $50,000, Bristol]
The San Diego area right-hander is a Long Beach State commit in the phase of the draft where failing to sign a pick comes with no cost. Ball had 119 K in 73+ IP with a 0.86 ERA this spring.
12 (363): Tyler Shryock, SS, L/R, 6-0, 170 Cal State Bakersfield [SIGNED, Great Falls]
Shryock is the first infielder the Sox have taken from a four-year college. The junior hit .357/.413/.426 for Bakersfield, which plays in the WAC, this spring.
13 (393): Daniel Hayes, 1B, L/R, 6-5, 210, Oregon State [SIGNED, Great Falls]
The senior hit just .270/.380/.413 this spring for the Beavers, which are still in the NCAA Tournament and began the super regional against Kansas State on the same day Hayes was drafted. Hayes was much more productive as a junior: .307/.457/.544.
14 (423): Tyler Barnette, RHP, 6-2, 215, UNC Charlotte [SIGNED, Bristol]
Barnette was drafted out of high school in the 9th round by Boston in 2010. He opted to go to Charlotte and had a standout freshman year, being named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year (2.29 ERA, 56 K, 24 BB in 90.1 IP). His numbers dropped as a sophomore (4.20 ERA, 33 K, 29 BB in 49.1 IP) and were only marginally better this year (3.97 ERA, 59 K, 29 BB in 95.1 IP). He has a fastball that sits around 90 with good, but inconsistent slider and change up offerings. If the Sox can get him to show his best stuff regularly he sounds like a good project.
15 (453): Andre Wheeler, LHP, 6-1, 185, Texas Tech [SIGNED, Bristol]
The junior had a 6.19 ERA with 21 K and 18 BB in 32 IP as a reliever this spring. He threw a combined 19 innings in his first two years with the Red Raiders.
16 (483): John (Christian) Stringer, SS, L/R, 5-11, 180, Rice [SIGNED, Great Falls]
As a senior at Rice, posted a .304 average with one home run and 27 RBI for the Owls. He posted better numbers in 2012 in his first year playing in DI, including a .343 average, and was named All-Conference in the C-USA. Stringer spent two years prior in JuCo. Noted for glove work. Rice player profile.
17 (513): Joey Wagman, RHP, 6-0, 180, Cal Poly [SIGNED, Great Falls]
Wagman is a younger senior (still 21) who posted 2.96 ERA, 103 K, 106 H and 29 BB in 112.1 innings for the Big West program. Amazingly, he only pitched 16 innings total during his high school career, with three pitchers ahead of him (including top overall pick Mark Appel). Upper 80’s fastball, good 12-6 curve, some other breaking pitches, with good control.
18 (543): Michael Carballo, CF, R/R, 5-11, 188, Tennessee Wesleyan [SIGNED, Great Falls]
Carballo moved around a lot. He redshirted his freshman year at South Florida, then played a year at Miami Dade College and posted pedestrian numbers, before landing at Tennessee Wesleyan for his junior year (with two years of eligibility remaining). He posted a .167/.222/.286 line in just 19 games this year for the NAIA school, who has him listed as a catcher on their roster.
19 (573): Adam Engel, CF, R/R, 6-1, 215, Louisville [SIGNED, $100,000, Great Falls]
Engel is toolsy and athletic, and came into the spring considered highly sought after for the draft thanks to excellent speed and good defensive ability in center. He hit just .229 in the Cape Cod League last summer and struggled at the plate this spring (.237/.368/.297). He may elect to return for one more year of school to improve his draft position. Louisville is still in the NCAA Tournament. MLB.com scouting video. Louisville player bio.
20 (603): Dillon Haupt, C, R/R, 6-5, 225, San Diego [SIGNED, Great Falls]
A 21-year-old senior and the first catcher for the Sox in this draft. Haupt hit .277/.363/.529 this season for San Diego. He played two years at San Diego Mesa College prior to his two years at USD. Listed as #135 among CA draft prospects by Baseball America. Noted for arm strength. San Diego bio.
21 (633): Toby Thomas, SS, R/R, 5-9, 180, Pensacola State CC [SIGNED, Bristol]
This 19-year old was a two-way player at Pensacola. He hit .341 this spring as a freshman, but also pitched 20 innings and posted a 0.45 ERA and striking out 17.
22 (663): Nolan Earley, OF, L/L, 6-0, 205, South Alabama [SIGNED, Bristol]
This senior outfielder hit .323/.411/.451 this spring. Brother of Michael Earley, currently playing with AA Birmingham in the Sox organization. He was also a high school quarterback.
23 (693): Trey Wimmer, C, R/R, 6-3, 225, Liberty [SIGNED, Great Falls]
Trey is a fifth-year senior catcher out of Liberty. He’s already 23 years old. Wimmer hit .296/.359/.453 this spring.
24 (723): Jacob Morris, CF, R/R, 6-3, 215, Arkansas [SIGNED, Great Falls]

25 (753): Alex Powers, RHP, 6-4, 180, Southern New Hampshire [SIGNED, Bristol]
This 21-year-old junior struck out 52 against 20 walks in 43 innings this spring. He was used mostly as a reliever. Baseball America had him as the No. 7 prospect among Division II schools going into the draft. MLB.com scouting video.
26 (783): Charles Sharrer, RHP, 6-1, 195, Cal State East Bay [SIGNED, Bristol]
Sharrar is listed as a pitcher, but had better numbers as a hitter for the DII program. He had 18 strikeouts and 11 walks with a 3.66 ERA in 19.2 innings as a pitcher and hit .333/.356/.519 this season as a senior.
27 (813): Devin Moore, RHP, 6-3, 210, Indiana State [SIGNED, Bristol]
The Sox seem to gravitate towards Indiana State. Brady Shoemaker, Nick Ciolli and Brian Omogrosso are all recent Sycamore picks. Moore is a senior that had a 2.90 ERA with 63 K and 28 BB in 80.2 IP.
28 (843): Jeff McKenzie, LHP, 6-0, 170, Cal State Bakersfield [SIGNED, Great Falls]
McKenzie joins college teammate Tyler Shryock, the Sox 12th round pick. He was Bakersfield’s best pitcher this spring with a 1.88 ERA in 15 starts. He struck out 88 and walked 24 in 114.2 innings.
29 (873): Matt Abramson, RHP, 6-2, 185, Tampa [SIGNED, Great Falls]

30 (903): Jon Bengard, RHP, 6-4, 180, California Baptist [SIGNED, Bristol]
Bengard put up nice numbers for the Division II program. He struck out 113 batters against 33 walks in 112 innings and posted a 2.17 ERA. He was a reliever for two years before successfully making the move to the rotation.
31 (933): Sean Hagan, LHP, 6-6, 235, St. John’s [SIGNED, Great Falls]
Hagan wasn’t very impressive this year (5.16 ERA, 47 K, 27 BB in 90.2 IP), but 6-foot-6 lefties aren’t very common. Last year he was much more productive. In 108.2 innings as a junior he had a 2.90 ERA with 68 strikeouts and was drafted in the 29th round by the Twins. St. John’s bio.
32 (963): Darian Johnson, OF, S/R, 6-1, 195, Lamar [SIGNED, Bristol]
Johnson was the top hitter on a Lamar team that won 39 games this spring. He hit .371/.444/.458 for the Division I program. He was also 9/9 in stolen base attempts. Johnson was a big time college performer, being named second team All-America for Mesa CC in both of his years there before transferring to Lamar. Lamar bio.
33 (993): Octavio Rodriguez, LHP, 6-4, 185, Franklin HS (TX)
Another flyer on a tough sign, Rodriguez is committed to Oklahoma. He has a strong pitcher’s frame and already hits 93 with his fastball. He also throws a change and a curve. Rodriguez is seen as a potential top round talent in the future and could be a backup plan for any overslot money. MLB.com scouting video.
34 (1023): Tyrell King, LHP, 6-4, 180, Yavapai College (AZ)
King pitched just 12 innings this season as a freshman. He had 18 strikeouts and a whopping 13 walks with a 6.00 ERA.

The Chicagoan is a product of the Sox Amateur City Elite program. He is a Vanderbilt commit. MLB.com scouting video.
