Only two games on the slate for Tuesday, with the MLB All Star Game being played. Kannpolis squandered a nice start from Jeff McKenzie to lose in extras, and the DSL Sox won in a rout.
Augusta 7, Kannapolis 6 (F/12)
Starter Jeff McKenzie threw a gem, going 6 innings giving up 4 hits and no walks, striking out 5. This was probably McKenzie’s best start as a pro, but the Intimidators gave a 6-0 lead away late. Tyler Barnette eventually gave up the winner on a ground-out in the 12th. Trey Michalczewski had a double and single but also a couple strikeouts, sort of a microcosm of his season to date. Carl Thomore was the other hitter with two knocks.
DSL White Sox 12, DSL Reds 5
Ramon Beltre, Jose Reyes, Maiker Feliz and Daniel Gonzalez had three hits each in DSL’s lopsided victory. Gonzalez is 19 so he’s not as young as some of the highly touted prospects, but he’s hitting .336 in in 28 games with as many walks as strikeouts (8). The catcher is in his 2nd year in the DSL. LHP Josbel Coroba, one of the youngest players on the roster (turned 17 in May), had a couple scoreless innings and has performed well so far on the season: 23.1 IP, 14 H, 13 BB, 23 K.
