White Sox affiliates went 2-3 on Monday with failed late inning rallies by both the AA and AAA clubs. Andy Wilkins stayed hot, Micah Johnson got hot and the Voyagers had a hit parade in Montana.
Louisville 6, Charlotte 5
The Knights tried valiantly to rally from behind in the top of the ninth but fell just short as they lose to the Bats. Micah Johnson had a big day by going 3-4 with an RBI while Andy Wilkins stayed red hot by going 3-5. Matt Davidson has sputtered ever since he had a resurgence and is now hitting .201 after going 1-5 with an RBI, but no strikeouts may be encouraging. Veteran pitcher Chien-Ming Wang went 5 innings and gave up ten hits and five earned runs. Meanwhile former Sox farm hand David Holmberg went six innings for the Bats, gave up eleven hits, but only three earned runs.
Tennessee 11, Birmingham 8
The Barons also had a late rally snuffed as top Cubs prospects did their damage, with Albert Almora and Addison Russell each going 4-6. Meanwhile Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson both went 2-4 with a walk, and Thompson had two doubles and an RBI. Rangel Ravelo had a rare hitless day, but still contributed with an RBI. Chris Curley went 2-3 with two RBIs, including one from a home run. Angel Sanchez was lit up in five innings pitched, giving up seven earned runs on ten hits and four walks.
Kannapolis 5, Lakewood 3
The Intimidators had a good day with a victory over the BlueClaws. Adam Engel went 1-4, and Trey Michalczewski went hitless, though he and an RBI. Ryan Leonards went 2-3 with an RBI and stolen base. Zach Voight and Jeremy Dowdy each went 2-4. Brandon Brennan was the winning pitcher, going six frames and only giving up three runs on seven hits, helped by his five strikeouts.
Great Falls 12, Missoula 4
The Voyagers hammered the Osprey with the help of six home runs. Toby Thomas and Zach Fish each had one home run, with Fish driving in 3 runs. Meanwhile, Dillon Haupt and Patrick Palmeiro each had two home runs and two RBIs a piece. Haupt and Palmeiro’s home runs were of the back-to-back variety, both times, a truly rare feat.
DSL Reds 2, DSL White Sox 0
The DSL White Sox were shutout as Maiker Feliz was the only hitter to get multiple hits, with on being a double. Nelson Acosta was the bad luck pitcher, striking out four in as many innings while only giving up two runs.
AZL Padres 11, AZL White Sox 8
The AZL club lost an offense-heavy game, with every one of their starting nine finding a way on base. Louis Silverio went 2-5 with a double and a home run (his first as a pro). Olympian Eddy Alvarez hit his second homer in a 1-5 day and is hitting .301. Catcher Jose Barraza tripled and continues to hit well in his return from missing the 2013 season. On the pitching side, Kelvis Valerio got hit around a bit, giving up 6 runs on 10 hits in 5 innings. 22-year-old lefty Mike Gomez struck out four in 2.2 innings of work, and he’s now struck out an impressive 25 batters in 13.1 innings to go along with a nice 2.20 GO/AO. His 10 walks so far are not ideal though.
