2013 breakout pitcher Adam Lopez made his 2014 debut in Arizona after missing most of the season with a torn ACL. The Arizona League White Sox pushed across three runs in the 9th to secure a come from behind victory, otherwise it was all losses for the White Sox affiliates.
Pawtucket 6, Charlotte 4
The Knights tagged Red Sox top pitching prospect Henry Owens for four runs over five innings but the bullpen couldn’t hold a 9th inning lead. Andre Reinzo started the game and allowed two runs over five innings and Jared Mitchell went 2-3 with two walks. Avisail Garcia went 1-4 and struck out three times and catcher Miguel Gonzalez went 2-4 with a double.
Huntsville 13, Birmingham 0
Myles Jaye, Jefferson Olacio, and Kyle Hansen were lit up by the Stars and combined to give up all 13 runs (11 earned), thanks in part to ten walks. The offense was equally feeble, generating seven hits and no runs.
Lynchburg 2, Winston-Salem 1
J.B. Wendelken threw seven innings of one-run ball but reliever Ben Brewster’s first earned run allowed in Winston-Dash proved costly as the Dash lost to the Hillcats. Brewster, a 2014 draft pick, started in Arizona, had a stint in Kannapolis, and now has reached the Dash with a combined ERA of 1.46 over his three stops. Wendelken only allowed five hits and one walk over his seven innings of work, striking out five batters. Offensively, Cleuluis Rondon, Courtney Hawkins, and Jake Peter had one hit a piece.
Hagerstown 5, Kannapolis 3
Recently promoted shortshop Toby Thomas homered and Danny Hayes went 2-4 with a double but that was all the offense the Intimidators could muster Sunday. 20 year-old starter Jordan Guerrero pitched well, allowing one earned run over his 4.2 innings, striking out six. The Sox have been bouncing Guerrero between starting and relieving, either way he’s been good, posting a 3.00 ERA over 60 innings and striking out 67 batters.
Grand Junction 9, Great Falls 4
Shortshop Tyler Shyrock was demoted from Kannapolis but has responded well, he went 3-5 Sunday with two stolen bases. Starter Matt Ball was betrayed by his defense, he allowed five runs over his four innings, but only two earned. 2014 3rd round draft pick Jace Fry couldn’t stop the bleeding when he came on in relief, Fry allowed two runs over 1.2 innings, though he did strike out three and didn’t walk anyone.
AZL White Sox 5, AZL Giants 4
2013 breakout pitcher Adam Lopez made his debut Sunday, pitching one inning and striking out two batters and posted zeros otherwise. Lopez impressed scouts in 2013 by striking out an ridiculous 129 batters over his 99.1 innings, only allowing 84 hits and posting a 2.54 ERA. Sadly Lopez torn his ACL in the off-season, but hopefully he is able to finish the year strong. Offensively, centerfielder Michael Suiter homered and the Arizona Sox scored three times in the 9th to win the game.
