Charlotte 3, Durham 2
The Knights could only muster five hits in support of starter Scott Carroll, with Dan Black, Carlos Sanchez and Leury Garcia (playing centerfield and leading off) each getting a hit on the board. It was the resurgent Matt Davidson who led the way, going 2-3 with a walk, double and home run as he’s brought his average to .289 on the young season. Carroll only gave up one run in 5.2 IP along with four hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Arcenio Leon got the win in relief and Jairo Asencio racked up his fifth save of the year.
Birmingham 3, Penascola 2
Jacob May, Christian Marrero and Jason Coats led the way for the Barons with two hits apiece behind Myles Jaye. May is getting used to the leadoff spot after the Barons moved Anderson to the two-spot and Coats had two doubles in today’s game and picked up an RBI. Marcus Lemon was the hero with a two RBI single. Jaye gave up no runs, had four strikeouts and three walks in six innings pitched as he lowered his ERA to 4.11. Onelki Garcia got roughed up for two runs in 1.2 innings of relief and Cody Winiarski got a four out save, his first save of the year, with three strikeouts.
Winston-Salem 4, Carolina 2
James Dykstra has officially become too ridiculous for A+ ball. Following his no hitter, Dykstra went seven strong frames, gave up five hits, struck out four, walked none and gave up an uncharacteristic single run. Keenyn Walker had the only extra base hit as he went 1-3 with a double and a walk. Keon Barnum and Adam Engel each had two singles and scored a run and Cleuluis Rondon went 1-3 with two walks and a run scored. Interestingly Trey Michalczewski only got one at bat before being pulled for reportedly dogging it on a pop fly, so that’ll be an interesting story to follow, but let us not let that take away from James Dykstra being silly.
Kannapolis 10, West Virginia 5
The Intimidators went nuts with 15 hits. Eddy Alvarez and Michael Suiter set the table with three hits each atop the Kannapolis lineup, each getting a double. Chris Curley went 2-4 with a double, homer and four RBIs. Every starter got a hit, with the “worst” performances coming from 2014 draftees Mason Robbins who went 1-5 with an RBI double and a 1-5 Brett Austin whose average slipped to a still stellar .433. Meanwhile Jordan Guerrero followed up his 11 strikeout effort with six innings of five hit ball, one earned run, a walk and four strikeouts. David Trexler and interesting prospect (more on why in the future) Brett Bruening pitched in relief. Trexler struck out two in two innings while giving up a run and Bruening did the inverse in one inning, striking out one and giving up two runs.
