Charlotte 4, Norfolk 1
Kyle Drabek made his debut for the Charlotte Knights, as they improved to 9-6 and grabbed a share of first place. Drabek went four innings, allowing three hits and a walk, while striking out one. Maikel Cleto, a candidate for the White Sox bullpen, threw three innings of relief, allowing a hit and striking out one (and has a 10 game scoreless streak). In five at bats, Carlos Sanchez had one hit to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, but struck out three times. Matt Davidson raised his season average to .275 with a hit in three at bats. Trayce Thompson had a fantastic night – both offensively and defensively. Thompson had three hits (one double) in four at bats, scoring two runs. He still, however, is struggling with controlling the strike zone with a 19:4 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. A natural centerfielder, Thompson also had a magnificent, home run saving catch in right-centerfield. The recently promoted Jason Coats had a hit, two RBIs, and a strikeout on the night. Dan Black hasn’t played as much as some of the starters, but he’s made the most of what he’s had, getting on base in every game he’s played this year and adding a HR in this game.
Birmingham 2, Pensacola 1
Tyler Danish shined, as he pitched six shutout innings for the Barons. Danish struck out seven and walked two, allowing just three hits. Nolan Sanburn worked an inning of relief, allowing two hits, one earned run, a walk, while striking out one. Joey DeMichele tallied a walk-off game-winning single in the 9th. Raul Fernandez struck out four in two innings, allowing one hit and no walks. Batting leadoff, Jacob May (.719 OPS) had three hits (one double) and an RBI in four at bats. Tim Anderson struck out once and had a hit in four at bats, while also getting his eighth stolen base of the season. Courtney Hawkins had a hit and a strikeout in four at bats.
Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 2
The Dash improved to 6-9, as the bullpen proved excellent, working 5.1 innings of relief. Robinson Leyer allowed six hits, two runs (1 ER), a walk and one strikeout in 4.2 IP. Noted sleeper prospect Andre Wheeler worked 2.1 IP of perfect relief, with two strikeouts and no hits/walks allowed. Zach Isler earned the save. Batting cleanup, Keon Barnum had three hits and a strikeout in four at bats. Adam Engel drew a walk (no SOs) and scored a run in three at bats. Cleuluis Rondon doubled, but struck out twice in four at bats. On the base-paths, Engel and Keenyn Walker continued to be aggressive. Walker stole three bases (10 on the season), striking out twice, walking once, and a scoring a run. Engel stole his eighth bag of the season.
Kannapolis 1, Hickory 9
Starter Yelmison Peralta allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in his four innings of work. The offense struggled mightily, mustering just four hits on the night – three of which were from Michael Suiter. Christian Stringer drew two walks in four PAs. Brett Austin walked and struck out once in four PAs.
