Only two games on the slate Monday, with both White Sox affiliates winning by a lone run. Myles Jaye was the star of the day, hurling seven no-hit innings for the Barons.
Charlotte 7, Toledo 6 (F/10)
The Knights maintained their grip on first place with some late heroics after starting the game down 5-0. Dan Black hit a game-tying home run in the 9th, and while he’s not played quite every day he’s been destroying the ball when he has: 1.208 OPS, 4 HR and as many strikeouts as walks (8) in 11 games. Recently promoted outfielder Jason Coats provided the walk-off winner on a would-be double in the 10th to cap his 3-hit day. Trayce Thompson had another strong showing, going 2-5 with a triple. Carlos Sanchez went 0-5 with a pair of punch-outs, so his hitting streak is over. RHP Chris Beck struggled in his start, allowing 5 ER in 4.2 IP but also whiffing 7. Beck was wearing glasses, which seems to be a new thing, but we’re not sure if he was wearing contacts previously or if the adjustment to them was a factor.
Birmingham 3, Jacksonville 2
Right-hander Myles Jaye made good use of his new slider on his way to a dominant 7 inning no-hit performance. The 23-year old struck out seven, walked none and the only baserunner got on via an error by third baseman Jeremy Farrell. Cody Winiarski allowed the no-hit break up in the 8th but posted two innings of scoreless, walkless relief while whiffing three. Jacob May led the offense with a 3-5 day including a double and two more stolen bases, as he pushed his season average up to .314. Courtney Hawkins added a double and a triple in four trips to the plate.
