The affiliates had a nice 4-1 day featuring a strong pitching performance from a recent call-up, multiple come-backs, a walk-off dinger and a walk on three pitches…
Charlotte 4, Louisville 0
The Knights won their fourth straight game behind a strong performance from recent 26th man Chris Beck. The righty threw six innings of one-hit, shutout ball, walking a pair and whiffing five. He also had 10 ground outs against just 1 flyout. In the game recap, Beck was quoted as saying all his pitches were working, and in particular his breaking ball was the best its been this year. Offensively, Matt Davidson and Jason Coats contributed a pair of singles each with Coats adding a stolen base from the leadoff spot. Dan Black hit a 3-run home run to tie for the league lead (6) in that category as he continues to mash.
Birmingham 3, Chattanooga 2, F/8 (DH game 1)
Joey DeMichele hit a walk-off solo bomb to win what was supposed to be a seven inning affair in game one of the Barons’ doubleheader. Courtney Hawkins went 2-3 with a double and a strikeout, Tim Anderson and Jacob May both added singles in three plate appearances, and DeMichele added a stolen base. On the pitching end, Mark Blackmar put up a quality start (6 IP, 2 ER), and Miguel Chalas threw 2 scoreless innings as he continues to excel in AA.
Chattanooga 4, Birmingham 0, F/7 (DH game 2)
The Barons dropped the back end of their DH despite not allowing an earned run, thanks to four errors (Anderson, Martin Medina, Kyle Hansen x2). There wasn’t much offense for Birmingham, as they collected just three hits. Right-hander Tyler Barnette did pretty well in a spot start (his first start of the year) allowing an unearned run on 5 hits and whiffing 2 in 5 innings. Despite the errors, Hansen’s pitching performance was solid, as he struck out four while allowing 2 hits and a walk in 2 innings.
Winston-Salem 7, Salem 5
The Dash came back from a 5-1 deficit to win this one thanks to some timely hitting. Trey Michalczewski continues to improve from his rough start to the year, as he booked 2 hits in 4 at-bats including a double, adding a walk. Adam Engel keeps upping the ante on his case for promotion with his second home run of the year and a single (but also 2 K’s). Matt Heidenreich had his first poor outing of the season: 7 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Rule V (MiLB phase) selection Peter Tago struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings as he continues to show surprisingly good control with his big fastball this year.
Kannapolis 7, Lexington 3
The Intimidators overcame some early struggles and oddities to win this one and take the series three games to one. Starter Yelmison Peralta‘s first inning opened like this: walk, balk, walk on three pitches (umpire lost count), E6 on force attempt. Somehow he escaped allowing just two runs that inning and finished strong: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 K. The offense was led by an All In The Family org-guy combo: two doubles from Tyler Williams (son of team President, Kenny) and three hits from James Baldwin (son of former White Sox pitcher by same name). Christian Stringer added a pair of hits in four trips to the plate, and Louie Lechich had a triple and a walk.
