Charlotte 7, Syracuse 1
The Knights soundly defeated the Syracuse Chiefs on Sunday behind a stellar outing from Chris Beck. Beck only allowed one run on six hits over seven innings and has only given up one run over his last two starts. First baseman Dan Black went 3-3 with a triple and a walk and Trayce Thompson blasted a three run home run to put the game away. Thompson went 2-3 with a walk in addition to his home run and his two hits Sunday matched his total hits from his previous nine games. Maikel Cleto and Daniel Webb pitched a perfect 8th and 9th innings respectively to close the game out.
Mobile 4, Birmingham 3
The Barons staged a furious rally by scoring three runs in the 8th and 9th inning, but unfortunately the Mobile BayBears scored in the bottom of the 9th to earn the walk-off win Sunday. The Barons squandered chances to score in multiple innings, going o-11 with runners in scoring position. Jacob May went 1-4 with two stolen bases, the former third round pick has 19 stolen bases on the season. Danny Hayes and Joey DeMichele both went 2-4 with a double to pace the Barons attack. Starter Mark Blackmar pitched seven strong innings, giving up three earned runs over six hits and two walks, striking out five.
Winston-Salem 12, Salem 1
The day after being shutout, the Winston-Salem offense roared back to life by pounding out fifteen hits and twelve runs to rout the Salem Red Sox. Centerfielder Adam Engel and third baseman Trey Michalczewski had monster days to lead the Dash. Engel nearly hit for the cycle, going 4-5 with a triple and a home run. Michalczewski went 3-4 with a home run and a walk and has been on a tear recently, hitting .361 with three home runs over his past 10 games. Additionally, Ethan Wilson hit his first career home run (read about Wilson’s story here) and Chris Jacobs also went deep. Starter Matt Heidenreich cruised through his seven innings, only allowing one run on four hits and two walks, striking out six Red Sox.
Kannapolis 4, Lakewood 1
Jordan Guerrero would like a one way ticket to Winston-Salem please. The 20 year-old impressed at Kannapolis last season but is now completely dominating the South Atlantic League hitters. Guerrero struck out eight over his six scoreless innings, only allowing three hits and two walks and his ERA this season is now 1.37. Offensively, Toby Thomas and Ryan Leonards both went 2-4 and Ryan Plourde went 1-2 with a double and a walk.
