White Sox Minor League Recap 5/23/2015: Steals, Errors and Thin Ice

An impressive skate on thin ice from the Barons’ starter allowed the affiliates to avoid being swept, on a day with many stolen bases but also many errors…
Lehigh Valley 9, Charlotte 5
An early 3-0 lead quickly evaporating for the Knights as they fell to Jordan Danks and the Iron Pigs. Charlotte starter Junior Guerra appeared to be continuing his recent dominance through four innings, but fell apart in the 5th allowing five baserunners and recording just one out. On the offensive side, Micah Johnson went 1-2 with 3 walks and a stolen base in his second game back in action. Matt Davidson booked a double and a walk (along with two strikeouts) in five trips to the plate, and backup catcher George Kottaras had a perfect day: 1-1. 2B, 3 BB. The Knights got three stolen bases in this one without being caught – Johnson (his 3rd), Trayce Thompson (5th) and Leury Garcia (18th).
Birmingham 2, Biloxi 0
The Barons won behind a 3-pitcher shutout, with Tyler Barnette doing an impressive rope-a-dope to get it done. Barnette, who has stepped into the rotation after some injuries, walked 6 batters in 6.2 innings, but only allowed 2 hits and didn’t give up a run. He only struck out one. Miguel Chalas and Cody Winiarski, both of whom have been effective out of the pen this year, completed the shutout. The offense was led by Courtney Hawkins, who went a perfect 2-2 plus a walk and a sac fly to add to his recent resurgence (.300/.385/.433 in May, .400/.467/.510 in his last 7). Joey DeMichele added a 3-4 performance along with a stolen base, and his average has been climbing as well (.312/.361/.403 in May). The Barons recorded eight hits in this one, all of which were singles.
Salem 4, Winston-Salem 3
Like the Knights, the Dash grabbed a 3-0 lead but couldn’t make it stick. Matt Heidenreich had another solid start, allowing one run in 6 innings, striking out a pair. But Brian Clark and Jose Brito gave up three unearned runs as the Dash defense collapsed under the weight of errors from Keenyn Walker (his 6th of the year), Cleuluis Rondon (9th) and Brito (1st). Catcher Omar Narvaez had a double and a single, while Keenyn Walker had a pair of hits along with a walk. Adam Engel was 1-4 but was caught stealing, and Trey Michalczewski keeps hitting, adding a double in four at-bats.
Hickory 10, Kannapolis 5
After shutting down the competition for three games, finally an Intimidators pitcher looked mortal as Kannapolis got beat up 10-5. Starter Yelmison Peralta allowed 9 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings. Eddy Alvarez and Christian Stringer each had a hit and a stolen base (with Alvarez adding a walk) in 4 at-bats, while outfielders Michael Danner and James Baldwin each added a double and a walk. Like the Knights, the I’s stole three bases on the game without being caught: Alvarez (his 14th), Stringer (8th) and Baldwin (5th). Unfortunately the also committed four errors: two for Ryan Leonards (5th and 6th), one for Mason Robbins (2nd) and Zach Fish (1st).
