Charlotte 7, Lehigh Valley 5
The Knights trailed late into the game Sunday but were able to score two runs in the 7th and two more runs in the 9th to earn the victory. Starter Brady Penny pitched well but was let down by his defense, which committed three errors. Penny threw six innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks. Matt Davidson broke the 5-5 tie in the 9th with an RBI double, which was his only hit. Left fielder Jason Coats hit his first Triple-A home run while going 2-3 with two walks, and Trayce Thompson went 3-5. Relievers Jarrett Casey and Jairo Asencio combined to throw three scoreless innings to close the game out for the Knights.
Birmingham 6, Biloxi 4
The Barons scored four late runs to surge past the Biloxi Shuckers on Sunday. Starter Frankie Montas pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three walks and four hits. Marcus Lemon went 3-3 with a walk to lead the Barons, while Jacob May went 2-5 with a double. Tim Anderson went 1-4 with two strikeouts and Courtney Hawkins went 0-3 with a walk. Reliever Blake Smith made his Barons debut after being acquired in a trade with the Dodgers for Eric Surkamp. Smith pitched two innings, allowing one run, and earned the win. Closer Raul Fernandez pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.
Salem 2, Winston-Salem 0
The Dash offense couldn’t get going on Sunday, only collecting six hits and no runs. Starter James Dykstra was the tough luck loser as he allowed two runs over his five innings of work, striking out two and walking none. First baseman Chris Jacobs went 2-3 with a walk and catcher Ryan Plourde went 2-4 with a double. Relievers Andre Wheeler and Devon Davis combined to pitch three scoreless innings in relief of Dykstra.
Hickory 8, Kannapolis 4
Starter Luis Martinez struggled over his 3.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. Reliever Kelvis Valerio pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to keep it close, but it wasn’t enough as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Intimidators Sunday. Eddy Alvarez, Louie Lechich, and Mason Robbins went 1-4 respectively, while catcher Brett Austin went 1-3 with a walk and Ethan Gross went 2-4.
