Charlotte 8, Columbus 7
Trayce Thompson put the Knights on the board with a 2nd inning two-run home run and sent everyone home happy with a 9th inning walk-off single. Thompson went 3-5 as the Knights survived a 9th inning meltdown by Jairo Asencio, who gave up four runs on five hits in a third of an inning. Maikel Cleto relieved Asencio and despite walking two, earned the win by throwing a scoreless 2/3rd of a inning. Starter Junior Guerra was excellent, going six innings, striking out eight while only giving up one run on five hits and two walks. Matt Davidson and Jason Coats homered while Leury Garcia and Micah Johnson went 2-4 to contribute to the Knights offensive attack. Jason Coats has homered in back-to-back games and is hitting .296/.321/.408 since joining the Knights.
Birmingham 6, Jacksonville 5 (10 innings)
The resilient Barons scored a run in the 8th, 9th, and 10th inning to secure a comeback win over the Jacksonville Suns on Thursday. Starter Mark Blackmar labored through his five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks. However, the Barons bullpen was excellent, as Miguel Chalas, Cody Winiarski, and Raul Fernandez combined to throw five innings while only allowing one run on three hits. Marcus Lemon, who entered the game at shortshop for Tim Anderson, had an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th and first baseman Danny Hayes hit a walk-off single in the 10th. The walk-off hit capped an excellent day for Hayes, who went 3-4 with a walk and is hitting .324 over his last ten games. Christian Marrero went 3-5 and fell a homer short of the cycle, while Tim Anderson and Courtney Hawkins went 1-4 and 1-5 respectively.
Winston-Salem 7, Lynchburg 3
The Dash cruised to a victory behind another strong Jake Cose start. Cose went five innings, striking out seven while allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. Cose now has a 2.10 ERA over his first five starts thus far this season. Jake Peter reached base in four of his five at bats, going 1-2 with three walks. Catcher Omar Narvaez went 2-4 and outfielder Keenyn Walker had a perfect day going 3-3 with a walk.
Kannapolis 4, Hagerstown 0
Starter Yelmison Peralta entered Thursday’s start with a 9.45 ERA and had given up fourteen runs over his last two starts. so naturally, Peralta fired six scoreless innings, only allowing three hits and two walks. Relievers Jacob Morris and Kelvis Valerio came on and completed the shutout to give the Imtimidators a dominant win. The offense only had five hits, but they were opportunistic on Hagerstown’s mistakes. First baseman John Ziznewski went 1-2 with a RBI double and two walks and second baseman Ethan Gross went 1-2 with a walk.
