Charlotte 2, Buffalo 1
Kyle Drabek shut down the Buffalo offense and Micah Johnson and Trayce Thompson provided just enough offense for the Knights to take the Sunday series finale. Drabek, who owns a 2.60 ERA with Charlotte, threw seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks. Relievers Matt Lindstrom and Zach Phillips came on and pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th inning to close out the win. Trayce Thompson hit a 4th inning solo home run which ultimately proved to be the difference. Micah Johnson was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk. Johnson has been on fire recently, hitting .424 over his past ten games to raise his minor league average to .330/.402/.409.
Chattanooga 4, Birmingham 3
In a highly anticipated battle between aces, the Barons fell in a tightly contested ballgame. Division rival Minnesota Twins prized prospect Jose Berrios opposed White Sox Frankie Montas and Berrios was a bit sharper. Montas, who threw a no-hitter in his last outing, tossed five innings allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six. Raul Fernandez entered in relief of Montas and allowed two runs (one earned) over two innings. Shortstop Tim Anderson went 2-5 with a stolen base, but did commit his 12th error in the field. First baseman Danny Hayes went 2-3 with two doubles and a walk.
Winston-Salem 5, Carolina 2
The Dash scored three runs in the 9th inning to surge ahead of the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday. Second baseman Jake Peter broke the tie and extended his career best 17 game hit streak in one swing, doubling in the 9th to score Ethan Wilson. Peter, a 7th round pick in the 2014 draft, is hitting .283/.361/.393 thus far this season. Ethan Wilson went 2-3 with a walk and Adam Engel went 1-3 with his 26th stolen base. Starter Robinson Leyer was solid, pitching five innings while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. The Dash bullpen was fantastic, Brian Clark threw three scoreless innings without allowing a hit and Michael Ynoa pitched a perfect 9th to earn the save.
Kannapolis 3, Delmarva 2 (6 innings)
Kannapolis won a rain shortened game over the Delmarva Shorebirds by a score of 3-2 on Sunday. The offense pounded out to 10 hits, but was 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position that prevented them from breaking the game open. Hunter Jones, Ryan Leonards, and John Ziznewski collected two hits each and catcher Ryan Plourde went 3-3 with a double. Mason Robbins went 1-3 with a triple and a walk and he has now tripled in three straight games and is hitting .479/.490/.680 thus far in June. Starter Zach Thompson went five innings, allowing two runs on on five hits and one walk to earn his first win of the year. Kelvis Valerio pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the unconventional save.
