The Charlotte Knights had Monday off, but will be in action Tuesday as Erik Johnson faces off against a rehabbing Justin Masterson and the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Chattanooga 4, Birmingham 1
The Barons lineup could only manage four hits as Birmingham lost for the fourth straight game. 1B/3B Chris Curley prevented the Barons from being shutout by hitting a 8th inning home run. Tyler Barnette, who entered the game without giving up an earned run in his past seven appearances, gave up two runs over three and third innings, walking two and striking out two. Barnette still has a sparkling 1.60 ERA over 10 appearances for the Barons this season. Tony Bucciferro pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to keep the game close.
Winston-Salem 7, Myrtle Beach 4
Every member of the Dash lineup collected a hit as they cruised to a victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Center fielder Adam Engel terrorized Pelican pitching at the lead-off spot by going 3-5 with a triple, a walk, and his 27th stolen base. Engel is hitting .324 over his past ten games and has been notably more contact-oriented, only striking out six times over his 37 at bats over that span. Switch-hitting catcher Omar Narvaez, who was batting cleanup, went 2-5 and is hitting a robust .355/.417/.419 so far in June. Starter Brandon Brennan made his first start of the season and pitched four innings and only allowed one run on two hits and two walks. Jake Cose followed with two scoreless innings innings and Rule V selection Peter Tago pitched a scoreless 9th for the save.
Delmarva 13, Kannapolis 5
Spencer Adams retired the first ten batters he faced, but it all went downhill for him and the rest of the Intimidators pitchers after that. Adams pitched a scoreless game into the 5th, but was let down by errors by his defense as he departed after giving up six runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk. Reliever Brad Salgado came on and gave up five runs (four earned) and Connor Walsh was similarly bitten by his defense, allowing two unearned runs. The Intimidators had four errors in total, two by shortstop Eddy Alvarez, who now has 19 field errors on the season. Offensively, it was a prettier picture as Alvarez went 3-5 with a double and his 25th stolen base. First baseman Alexander Simon, who was acquired a couple weeks ago from the Tampa Bay Rays organization, went 4-4 with two doubles and a home run.
DSL Blue Jays 7, DSL White Sox 1
In an effort to make the Intimidators fielders feel better perhaps, the DSL White Sox defense committed six errors in route to a loss on Monday.
