All the White Sox stateside affiliates were in action aside from the Great Falls Voyagers who were rained out and will make up the game with the Missoula Ospreys with a doubleheader at a later date.
Charlotte 5, Gwinnett 4
Starting pitcher Terance Marin‘s unbelievable Triple-A scoreless streak came to a end on Sunday at 31.1 innings, but Marin was still able to earn the victory. Marin, who recently wrote a guest piece exclusively for FutureSox.com, was an out away from throwing a complete game as he went 8.2 strong innings. Marin was chased in the 9th as he allowed two runs to score, but finished having only allowed four runs on six hits and a walk. Reliever Zach Phillips came on to record one out to complete his sixth save of the season.
Offensively, the 1-2 punch of Micah Johnson and Leury Garcia led the Knights. Johnson went 3-5 with an RBI and Garcia went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Matt Davidson and Jason Coats each drove in two runs to give Terance Marin just enough run support for the win.
Birmingham 9, Tennessee 4
The Birmingham Barons routed their Cubs affiliate rivals to win their season best fourth game in a row. Starter Tyler Danish had a bizarre line, he threw six innings, walked seven(!) and allowed three hits, but only allowed one run on a solo home run. Similarly to the Knights lineup, the 1-2 hitters of Tim Anderson and Joey DeMichele set the tone for the offense. Anderson went 2-4 with a walk and two stolen bases and DeMichele went 3-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Anderson’s two stolen bags gives him 27 on the season, which officially moves him ahead of injured teammate Jacob May for the Southern League lead. Courtney Hawkins went 2-5 with a double and catcher Rob Brantly hit a grand slam to pour it on for the Barons.
Frederick 5, Winston-Salem 2
Dash starter James Dykstra did not have his best stuff on Sunday, but battled to only allow four runs on twelve hits and one walk. Unfortunately, the Winston-Salem offense could only muster two runs in support. Second baseman Jake Peter continues to amaze, as his 1-4 performance extended his current hitting streak to 13 games. Peter, as you might recall, recently had a 20 game hitting streak and has remakably recorded a hit in 33 of his last 35 ballgames. Adam Engel, who has been scuffling a bit recently, went 1-3 with a walk and stole his 30th base of the season and Keon Barnum went 2-4.
Augusta 7, Kannapolis 3
The Intimidators squandered a three hit performance from lead-off man Eddy Alvarez, as they fell to the Augusta GreenJackets. Kannapolis starter Zach Thompson was a victim of a six run second inning but a trio of relievers combined to finish the remaining six innings without an earned run. David Trexler pitched two innings, Connor Walsh threw three innings, and Jacob Morris tossed a scoreless 8th inning to hold the GreenJackets to seven runs.
AZL White Sox 11, AZL Dodgers 3
The Arizona League White Sox offense was relentless as they pounded out sixteen hits to score eleven runs on Sunday. 2015 12th round draft pick Seby Zavala and 2015 6th round pick Corey Zangari both went 3-5 with two doubles to lead the charge. Outfielder Micker Adolfo went 1-3 with a double and a walk and Cody Daily went 2-5. The game was started by rehabbing former Sox closer Jesse Crain, who struck out two over a perfect frame. Reliever Brandon Quintero pitched three scoreless innings and Victor Done struck out five batter over two scoreless frames to close the game out.
