White Sox Minor League Recap 7/10/2015: Knights split a doubleheader, Barons and Intimidators tee-off

Norfolk 4, Charlotte 3
The Knights probably wanted their ace Erik Johnson to go more than four innings, but the recently named AAA All-Star Game starter exited after four stellar innings – only one hit allowed, no walks and three strikeouts. Johnson has to be feeling good about himself going into the break, a far cry from where the former #1 FutureSox prospect found himself last year.
Once Johnson exited he handed the ball over to Onelki Garcia, who gave up an early 2-0 lead provided by Jason Coats. Coats had all three RBIs for the Knights after going 3-4 with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Drew Garcia started at shortstop in wake of Tyler Saladino‘s call up and went 2-3 with a run scored. With an inherited runner from Garcia, Miguel Chalas recorded a blown save (in what would have been a shortened 7 inning game) as he allowed the third Tides runner to cross home. Blake Smith gave up the walkoff hit in the bottom of the ninth after he walked one and allowed three hits in only one third of an inning of work.
Charlotte 6, Norfolk 5
Coming off a loss the Knights struck quickly by scoring three runs in the first. The offense was blistering as the team racked up 13 total hits, three from Micah Johnson, now hitting .313 in AAA on the year. Leury Garcia, Jason Coats and Trayce Thompson each recorded two hits as well with Garcia and Coats each walking and having an RBI. Johnson, Garcia and Thompson each stole a base, brining Johnson and Garica’s AAA totals to 18 and 25 respectively. Chris Marrero and Matt Tuiasosopo each went yard in this game, with Tuiasosopo recording two RBIs.
Starter Terance Marin gave up ten hits in four innings, but limited the damage to only four runs. Jarrett Casey picked up the win, his eighth, and Maikel Cleto locked down the save.
Birmingham 8, Jackson 3
It was a balanced attack from the Barons with five Barons getting two hits each. Tim Anderson had a walk, run and RBI in addition to his two hits while Courtney Hawkins had his 17th double. Brian Fletcher and Danny Hayes each recorded two RBIs in addition to their two hits, with Fletcher hitting his fifth home run. Rob Brantly had two doubles to bring his average up to .273.
Tyler Danish didn’t quite turn in a vintage Danish performance, but the talented righty scattered 11 hits across seven innings and only allowed two earned runs. Danish only walked one runner and struck out four more.
Potomac 4, Winston-Salem 2
Starter James Dykstra was doomed by his defense as Dykstra only allowed six hits over seven innings while striking out five, but he gave up three unearned runs and took the loss. Nate Jones made an appearance while he begins his rehab assignment for the White Sox and threw a scoreless, one hit inning that saw him touching the upper 90s.
The offense wasn’t as stellar, scattering six hits. Adam Engel went 1-3 with a triple and walk. Engel scored off of a Trey Michalczewski single, who in turn scored off of a Keon Barnum double. Omar Narvaez also recorded a double in the loss.
Kannapolis 12, Charleston 6
Eddy Alvarez had a great day in the leadoff spot, going 2-3 with a walk, double and three RBIs. Ryan Leonards went 3-5 with a triple and two RBIs and Michael Danner went 2-5 with a triple and three RBIs. Nick Basto, Leonards and Ryan Plourde each took two walks.
Starter Yency Almonte went five innings of four run ball and struck out six batters. Brad Salgado recorded a blown save and win in 3.2 innings of work.
Great Falls 7, Ogden 2
The Voyagers offense was relentless in their attack of the Raptors. Frank Califano went 3-4 with two RBIs while Landon Lassiter, Jake Jarvis and Victor Velasquez each recorded two hits. Lassiter and Jarvis each had an RBI. Jarvis and Velasquez also had a triple each.
Starter Brannon Easterling went six innings, allowed two runs and struck out four.
AZL Athletics 6, AZL White Sox 2
Starter Yeuris Guerrero had a disastrous inning and two thirds despite not allowing any hits – Guerrero allowed seven walks in that time frame and four earned runs, all the AZL Athletics needed. Brandon Quintero was able to throw four and a third innings to give his team a fighting chance, while Taylore Cherry recorded two strikeouts in his scoreless frame.
The offense couldn’t muster much, scattering six hits. Daniel Mendick and Jake Fincher each had two hits, Mendick had the lone extra base hit in the form of a double. Micker Adolfo and Cody Daily chipped in the other two hits, with Daily recording the team’s only RBI.
DSL Padres 2, DSL White Sox 0
The DSL White Sox were blanked and took the loss in spite of an impressive seven inning, nine strikeout and two run performance from Jhoan Quijada.
