Just one stateside team played, as Charlotte was off for the AAA All Star break and the other teams simply had days off. Kannapolis and the DSL club both won easily…
Kannapolis 8, Lakewood 2
The Intimidators won with an 11-hit attack, featuring first baseman Alexander Simon‘s 2-double performance (plus a walk). Outfielder Michael Suiter, in his return from Winston-Salem, added a double, single and a walk as well. Eddy Alvarez and Ethan Gross contributed a pair of singles each. Starter Yelmison Peralta threw 6 innings of 2-run ball while only striking out one, but he gave the infield a workout as he induced 11 ground balls versus only 3 fly balls. The 20-year old has had a hard time in A-ball thus far, with this start lowering his ERA to 6.39 on the year. Jacob Morris threw another scoreless pair of frames as he continues his transition to pitching, and he’s showing some potential – in his last 10 outings, he’s struck out 24 batters while allowing just 8 hits in 18.1 innings, though he has walked 13 in that span.
DSL White Sox 6, DSL D-Backs 1
Carlos Perez‘ 2-4 day with a home run (which are rare generally in the DSL) and his 3rd stolen base led the Dominican squad to an easy win. The 18-year old catcher has been touted as one of the better LatAm prospects from the last couple signing periods for the White Sox, He’s posted a .302/.371/.407 line so far this season, though with the DSL you need to be careful with stats. Looking deeper, the more impressive number: just 3 strikeouts in 91 plate appearances. Outfielder Hanleth Otano added a 2-5 day with a triple.
NOTE: Tonight (July 15) is the AAA All Star Game, which will feature four players from the Charlotte Knights: RHP Erik Johnson, LHP Zach Phillips, 3B Matt Davidson and OF Trayce Thompson. Johnson is slated to get the start.
