Charlotte 8, Buffalo 3
The Knights snapped a five game losing streak in convincing fashion by defeating the Buffalo Bison on Wednesday night. Recently promoted catcher Rob Brantly made a nice impression on his new teammates by hitting a home run while going 2-5. Center fielder Jason Coats had a big night as well, Coats went 3-4 with a home run and a walk. The home run was Coats 13th over 93 games with the Knights.
Starter Kyle Drabek only allowed two runs over 5.2 innings and earned the win and reliever Junior Guerra tossed two shutout innings to collect the save.
Tennessee 13, Birmingham 1
The Barons were annihilated by the Tennessee Smokies on Wednesday night behind an offense onslaught. Starter Frank Montas just didn’t have his best stuff from the beginning, as he only lasted 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits and four walks. Montas also did not strike out a single batter, which was the first time he did not record a strikeout in an appearance all year. A trio of relievers followed Montas, but I won’t mention them to protect their identities as they combined to allow nine runs on twelve hits.
It wasn’t much better offensively, as the Barons could only muster five hits. Third baseman Nick Delmonico went 1-3 with a walk and was the only Baron to reach base twice.
Carolina 7, Winston-Salem 1
The usually potent Dash offense was muzzled on Wednesday night as they were routed by the Carolina Mudcats. Eddy Alvarez, who played shortstop while Cleuluis Rondon manned second base, went 1-4 with a stolen base. Dash starter Brandon Brennan was roughed up to the tune of four runs and then was forced out of the game by a hand injury in the 4th inning. Lefty reliever Andre Wheeler came on and allowed two runs over 2.2 innings and James Dykstra pitched two two innings without allowing an earned run in his first relief appearance of the year.
Kannapolis 7, Asheville 2
Starter Yelmison Peralta allowed one earned run over seven innings as he pitched the Intimidators to the victory. Peralta had plenty of run support as Louie Lechich went 3-4 with a stolen base and catcher Brett Austin went 1-3 with a two-run double and a walk. Reliever Matt Cooper continues to put up video game numbers as he recorded six strikeouts over two shutout innings. Cooper has not allowed a run in his past 15 innings and during that span he has struck out 32(!) batters and issued one walk.
AZL White Sox 9, AZL Indians 2
The Arizona League White Sox cruised to an easy win over their Indian affiliate counterparts. Catcher Seby Zavala continues to rake as he went 2-4 with a home run and a walk. Zavala is hitting a ridiculous .365/.433/.671 and has 18 extra base hits in just 85 at bats. 2015 6th round pick Corey Zangari went 2-3 with a walk and the former high schooler is now hitting .304/.338/.480 to begin his professional career. It was not all roses for the AZL hitters however, as top prospect Micker Adolfo suffered an ankle injury and had to helped off the field. The severity of the injury is unknown as this time, but when we receive an update it will be posted on the FutureSox twitter.
Starter Christopher Comito threw five innings of two-run ball and 2015 5th round draft pick Jordan Stephens tossed two perfect innings in relief. Stephens has a perfect 0.00 ERA over his first seven professional innings while only allowing two hits and one walk.
