Rochester 3, Charlotte 0
The Knights were blanked by Twins top prospect Jose Berrios and Erik Johnson proved to be mortal as he took the loss. Johnson gave up three runs, which is the most he has allowed in a start since June 5th, over 6.2 innings. Terence Marin came on in relief and threw 2.1 shutout innings to keep it close, but the duo of Johnson and Marin did not receive any run support. The offense could only manage five hits, two of which came off the bat of much maligned former White Sox Dayan Viciedo. Viciedo is hitting .344/.344/.469 over his first seven games back in the Sox organization. John Mayberry Jr, playing in his second game for the Knights, went 2-3 and Cleuluis Rondon went 0-3 with a strikeout in his Triple-A debut.
Pensacola 8, Birmingham 7
The Barons dropped a high scoring affair to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos despite some great offensive performances. Shortstop Tim Anderson led the way by going 2-4 with a double, a walk, and three stolen bases. The bags were Anderson’s 42nd, 43rd, and 44th stolen bases of the year which easily leads the Southern League. Third baseman Nick Delmonico went 2-4 with a home run, a walk, and three RBI’s. The homer was only Delmonico’s third of the year but it was his second in his last six games as he appears to be heating up. Second baseman Joey DeMichele was a home run away from the cycle, as he went 3-4 with a double and a triple.
Starter Robinson Leyer allowed six runs over four innings and the Barons bullpen were victims of a couple of late unearned runs to give the Blue Wahoos the win.
Winston-Salem 1, Salem 0
Jordan Guerrero had his best start of the year and proved why he is one of Chicago’s most exciting starting pitching prospects. Guerrero, who is FutureSox’s #14 prospect, struck out seven over seven shutout innings, only allowing three hits and one walk. Thanks to this fantastic pitching performance, the deciding run was scored in the first inning. Adam Engel singled to start the game and was driven in by a Trey Michalczewski double. The RBI was Michalczewski’s 63rd on the season, which is second most in the Carolina League. Engel continues to terrorize opposing pitchers and catchers, as he stole three bags to give him an unbelievable 52 thefts on the season. Engel has been absolutely on fire recently, over his last six games he is hitting .409/.552/.591 which has raised his season average to .263. After Gurrero departed the game, Michael Ynoa and Jefferson Olacio blanked the Salem Red Sox over the 8th and 9th inning respectively to nail down the win.
Greensboro 7, Kannapolis 6
The Intimidators dropped a close contest to the Greensboro Grasshoppers despite outhitting them 14 to 11. Starter Luis Martinez was shelled for the second consecutive outing, as he gave up five runs while only managing to last two innings. The talented 20 year-old Martinez had his best outing of his career (8 IP, 0 R, 2 H) three starts ago, but has given twelve runs in four innings since. Outfielder Michael Suiter emphatically extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a 3-5 night. The 23 year-old Hawaii native has collected a hit in 22 of the 23 games he has played in with the Intimidators this season. Catcher Ryan Plourde homered and Mason Robbins, Ryan Leonards, and Louie Lechich each had two hits on the evening.
Great Falls 9, Orem 3
Starter Brandon Magallones only allowed three hits over five shutout innings and the Voyagers offense pounded out 17 hits and 9 nines to rout the Orem Owlz. Catcher Zach Fish led the hit parade by going 3-5 and was joined by six other Voyager hitters who had multiple hits. Third baseman Johan Cruz reached base three times as he went 2-4 with a walk and two RBI’s.
AZL White Sox 5, AZL Diamondbacks 4 (10 innings)
Catcher Seby Zavala‘s fourth home run of the season was a game winner as he walked-off against the AZL D-backs. 19 of Zavala’s 32 hits have gone for extra bases as the 2015 12th round selection has been punishing the Arizona League all season. Outfielder David Walker added in three hits and first baseman Corey Zangari went 1-4 to lead the Sox to the win.
DSL Diamondbacks 3, DSL White Sox 2
The Dominican Summer League Sox could only manage two hits as they were defeated by the DSL D-backs. Sox starting pitcher Jhoan Quijada struck out eleven batters over five innings while not allowing a walk and reliever Fernando Caro pitched four shutouts innings in relief.
