Toledo 6, Charlotte 1
Starter Brad Penny struggled mightily and the Knights offense couldn’t get going as they were defeated by the Toledo Mud Hens on Sunday. Penny allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits and two walks over five innings. Terance Marin relieved Penny and threw two scoreless innings and Miguel Chalas tossed a perfect frame as well. The Charlotte lineup had three hits and outfielder Jason Coats had two of them. Coats went 2-4 with a double and the team’s only RBI and Dayan Viciedo walked twice.
Montgomery 10, Birmingham 6
FutureSox’s Will Siskel is on assignment in Birmingham and was on-hand to watch the Barons drop a sloppy game to the Montgomery Biscuits. White Sox top prospect Frankie Montas‘s plus stuff was on display (FB 95-98 MPH, SL 83-86 MPH) as he struck out nine batters over five innings. Montas struggled a bit with his command as he walked two and threw a wild pitch, but he still only allowed two earned runs and three hits. Relievers Raul Fernandez and Kyle Hansen both allowed three runs to score as they let the Biscuits surge ahead in the later innings.
After hitting two home runs yesterday, first baseman Danny Hayes went yard again as an encore and went 2-2 with three walks. Hayes had four home runs through 106 games this season but now has three in his past two contests. Jacob May went 2-5 with a double and second baseman Joey DeMichele hit a solo home run in the losing effort as well.
*The Winston-Salem Dash’s game with the Salem Red Sox was cancelled due to the wet field. The game will not be made up as the two squads do not play again this year. The Dash will return to action at home on Tuesday against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans with Yency Almonte on the bump*
Hagerstown 7, Kannapolis 2 (Game 1)
The Kannapolis bullpen had a 6th inning meltdown to squander a strong start from Zach Thompson in game one of a doubleheader. Thompson struggled with his control, but was able to scatter five walks and two hits over five innings as he only gave up one run. Reliever Ryan Riga gave up four runs over two/thirds of an inning and now sports a 32.40 ERA in a small sample size with the Intimidators. The Kannapolis offense somehow scored two runs on just two singles by Alexander Simon and Toby Thomas. Outfielder Michael Suiter went 0-2 with a walk which ended his miraculous and recording setting 23 game hitting streak. Suiter had 29 total hits and a .305 average over the course of his streak.
Hagerstown 4, Kannapolis 3 (Game 2)
After scoring two runs on two hits in game 1, the Intimidators pulled off three runs on two hits in game two thanks to a couple Hagerstown errors. 2015 4th round pick Zack Erwin was the tough luck loser as he only allowed one run over three innings of work. Erwin has a 1.13 ERA in a short stint with the Intimidators and a 0.92 ERA overall. Reliever Jacob Morris had a nice outing, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the game close.
Great Falls 2, Orem 1
The Great Falls Voyagers nipped the Orem Owlz 2-1 despite being outhit ten to five. Starter Evin Einhardt scattered eight hits over 5.2 shutout innings as he earned the win. Frank Califano lead the offense by going 2-4 out of the lead-off spot and Antonio Rodriguez went 1-4 with a double. Closer Danny Dopico threw two shutout innings to collect his sixth save of the season.
AZL White Sox 8, AZL Reds 4
The Arizona League Sox offense was relentless as they pounded out ten hits and walked seven times in route to defeating the AZL Reds on Sunday. First baseman Corey Zangari led the charge by going 2-5 with not one but TWO home runs. Zangari, a 2015 6th round draft pick out of high school, started off the year slow but has been on fire recently hitting .364/.429/.564 over his last 15 games. Bradley Strong went 3-4 with a double and a walk and David Walker and Daniel Mendick both walked three times.
Starter Christopher Comito earned the win by throwing five innings and allowing four runs. Relievers Jordan Stephens and Taylore Cherry each pitched two scoreless innings and are both having fantastic starts to their professional careers. Stephens, a 2015 5th round pick, has a 0.84 ERA with 14 strikeouts over 10.2 innings this season. Cherry, a 32nd round pick in the 2015 draft, has a 0.52 ERA over 17.1 innings and and has struck out 20 batters during that span.
