Mississippi 4, Birmingham 3
A 9th inning rally fell just short as the Barons lost to the Mississippi Braves on Thursday. Starter Mark Blackmar allowed four runs in the first before settling in to throw four scoreless innings. Shortstop Tim Anderson went 1-4 and drew his 22nd walk of the season. 22 walks may not seem like a big number, but to put that in perspective he only had 9 during the entire 2014 campaign. Christian Marrero went 2-3 with a triple and reliever Tony Bucciferro tossed three scoreless innings to keep the game close.
Winston-Salem 5, Myrtle Beach 4
The Winston-Salem Dash scored two runs in the 8th to tie the ballgame which set up a walk-off wild pitch in the 9th to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and jump back into first place in their division. Recently promoted Spencer Adams had his worst start in months, as he only lasted 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and (gasp) two walks. Adam’s two free passes matched his total walks in his past seven starts. Luckily, long man James Dykstra was ready and threw 4.2 shutout innings while only allowing one hit to give the Dash offense a chance to rally for the win. Adam Engel and Nick Basto both blasted solo home runs and Eddy Alvarez went 1-3 with a walk.
Savannah 6, Kannapolis 2
The Intimidators were no match for the surging Sand Gnats, as they fell by a score of 6-2 to give Savannah their 16th consecutive win. Jose Brito, making his first start of the season, was let down by his defense as he allowed six runs (three earned) over 3.1 innings of work. Reliever Jacob Morris came on and threw 2.2 scoreless innings and Ryan Riga followed with two more shutout innings. However, the Kannapolis offense could only manage two runs on seven hits in support.
Great Falls 10, Grand Junction 5
Great Falls won a slug fest with the Grand Junction Rockies, as the teams combined for 27 hits. Outfielder Louis Silverio went 3-4 with a double and a home run in a monster game. Catcher Casey Schroeder went 2-4 with a home run and first baseman Sikes Orvis went 2-3 with a home run to lead the charge. Suprisingly, Johan Cruz did not collect a hit and snapped a nine game hitting streak. Starter Tanner Banks earned the win by allowing three runs over 5.2 innings.
AZL White Sox 11, AZL Brewers 1
Micah Johnson returned to action as he made his first rehab start by going 0-3 for the AZL Sox. While Johnson couldn’t get it going, the AZL killer Z’s of Corey Zangari and Seby Zavala did most of the damage. Zangari went 2-5 with two RBI’s and Zavala went 2-4 with a double and a triple. This was Zavala’s first game since August 13th as he was getting a short rest, but he showed no signs of rust. Starter Yosmer Solorzano took the win by tossing six innings of one run ball.
