Charlotte 8, Norfolk 1
Journeyman Chris Volstad turned in a quality start for the Knights, going six innings of shutout baseball. The 29-year-old Volstad only allowed two hits, while allowing one walk and one strikeout. Matt Purke gave Charlotte a scoreless inning before Phillippe Aumont took the mound. Aumont nearly broke camp with the team, but has had a rough start to the season as he’s sporting a 13.50 ERA, not helped by yesterday’s three hit, one run appearance. Tommy Kahnle closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two.
With Tim Anderson out with a sprained wrist, Leury Garcia got the start at shortstop and went 2-5 with two singles, a line shared with Travis Ishikawa and Carlos Sanchez. Jason Coats was 2-5 with two doubles ahead of Daniel Fields (2-3) and Kevan Smith, who each had a pair of RBIs, Smith’s coming off of a home run.
Tennessee 7, Birmingham 3
White Sox top pitching prospect Carson Fulmer got roughed up to the tune of six innings of four run ball – coming off of six hits and four walks, with Fulmer only striking out four batters in this game. Robin Leyer faired much worse, giving up three earned runs in a meager 0.1 innings. Brian Clark did spin 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.
Adam Engel went 1-3 at the top of the order with an RBI and two walks. Engel also snagged his fourth stolen base of the season already. The second RBI that the Barons had belonged to second-year Baron Keenyn Walker. Eudy Pina and Marcus Lemon each had two hits to their names.
Winston-Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 2
Matt Cooper got his second career start and did not disappoint by striking out six batters in five innings. Cooper did allow three walks and two runs to score, but for someone who had never started before for the White Sox organization, it’s a promising start. Manny Martinez had 1.1 innings of scoreless work before Nolan Sanburn shut the door with five strikeouts over 2.2 innings to end the game.
Gerson Montilla led the way for the Dash by going 2-4 wiith an RBI. Marcus Davis was only 1-4, but he had a triple and two RBIs to place the Dash on top. Louie Lechich and Ryan Leonards each had a double.
Kannapolis 8, Delmarva 7
Ryan Riga had a rough start to yesterday’s match, giving up five runs in his 3.1 innings of work to the tune of 9 baserunners allowed (seven hits, two walks) and only one strikeout. Yelmison Peralta tried to do damage control over the next 2.2 innings and only allowed one run. Fortunately once the Intimidators got the lead, Matt Ball closed out the game with a two inning save.
Landon Lassiter and Corey Zangari serve as the heroes of the day. Lassiter was 4-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while the extremely young Zangari went 2-4 with a two run blast in the first inning, delivering his first home run of the year. All starters other than Casey Schroeder registered a hit, while Schroeder still managed to get on base with a walk.
