Charlotte 4, Durham 1
Jacob Turner had a very nice start for the Knights, giving up one run on four hits while striking out seven in six innings of work. Blake Smith and Tommy Kahnle were both spectacular in relief, combining to throw three scoreless innings without giving up a hit. At the plate, Jason Coats hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. He finished the night going 1 for 2 with two runs scored. Jacob May was another offensive standout, going 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Carlos Sanchez and Matt Davidson each had a hit and a RBI as well.
The Knights look to even the series tomorrow afternoon in the final game of a four game set with the Bulls, as Miguel Gonzalez is set to make the start.
Birmingham 6, Tennessee 1
Brandon Brennan had a terrific start, as he threw five scoreless innings while giving up three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Also on the mound, Brian Clark and Robinson Layer combined for three scoreless innings in relief. Offensively, Trey Michalczewski went 1 for 2 with a walk and three RBIs, and Keenyn Walker went 2 for 3 with a walk, double, and two runs scored. Eddy Alvarez, Joey DeMichele, and Nicky Delmonico each chipped in a hit and a RBI as well.
The Barons hit the road for a five game series with the Jackson Generals starting tomorrow night, as number five prospect Tyler Danish will make his third start of the season.
Salem 3, Winston-Salem 2 (1o innings)
Southpaw Blair Walters made the start, and he put together a solid outing. He went five innings, while giving up two runs on three hits with a strikeout. He did walk five batters, but was able to work around some of those free passes. Manny Martinez and Andre Wheeler each pitched two scoreless innings in relief, giving up one hit a piece. Kelvis Valerio suffered the loss, as he pitched the top of the tenth, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Offensively, Mason Robbins and Ryan Leonards both went 2 for 4, and Gerson Montilla, Nick Basto, and Marcus Davis each had one hit as well.
Number three prospect Spencer Adams will take the mound tomorrow afternoon against the Red Sox, as the Dash look to avoid the sweep.
Hickory 10, Kannapolis 2
Johnathan Frebis started for the Intimidators, and struggled from the start. He was able to last five innings, but gave up five runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Lefty Ryan Hinchley was the lone bright spot on the mound for the Intimidators, as he fired 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, giving up just one hit with three strikeouts. Offensively, lead off man and table setter Tyler Sullivan remained hot, as he went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Danny Medick went 2 for 3 and Corey Zangari went 1 for 4, launching his second home run of a season, a solo shot in the top of the third. Number ten prospect Micker Adolfo was promoted to Kannapolis this morning from extended Spring Training, and he went 1 for 4 with a single in his debut. Also worth noting, catcher Seby Zavala left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with an apparent left wrist injury, after being shook up on a catcher’s interference.
