Charlotte 6, Norfolk 3
Kevan Smith led the way for the Knights on Wednesday with a two-RBI home run in the sixth inning as he went 1-3. J.B. Shuck, freshly demoted from Chicago for Erik Johnson, had himself a great day at the plate as he had the only mutli-hit game, going 2-3 with a triple, walk and RBI – one has to assume his stay in Charlotte won’t be long. Tim Anderson and Travis Ishikawa had the other RBIs for the team, both coming off of singles. Jason Coats maintained his hot start by going 1-4, lowering his batting average to .404.
Chris Beck had a baffling stat line in the start – six innings, ten hits, one strikeout, one homer and only two runs allowed. This was no doubt aided by the four double plays he was able to induce. Daniel Webb threw two innings of one-hit ball in which he struck out and walked no batters and Tommy Kahnle allowed one earned run off of two hits in the ninth.
Jacob Turner will get the start against Gwinnett on Thursday.
Jackson 4, Birmingham 3
The Barons offense continues to flounder to start the season despite two-hit showings from Joey DeMichele, Nick Delmonico and Eudy Pina, the latter two each notching an RBI. The other RBI came off of a solo shot from Jake Peter‘s bat, who has been playing first base due to the crowd of middle infielders on the team. Adam Engel was able to swipe his 8th stolen base after going 1-4 with a double and a walk, while Eddy Alvarez went a disappointing 0-5.
On the pitching end David Holmberg was able to throw a stellar 7.1 innings, allowing only one earned run despite eight hits and only getting one strikeout. Peter Tago blew the save after allowing two earned runs and five hits in his 1.1 innings of work – this saw his ERA balloon to 7.27.
Brandon Brennan will look to lower his 11.25 ERA on Thursday against the Generals.
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 1
The Dash were only able to get four hits on Wednesday, with the only run coming from Brett Austin as he drove in Nick Basto, who reached based twice with the team’s only two walks. Gerson Montilla, Marcus Davis and Louie Lechich had the other three singles.
On the mound, Jordan Stephens was dealing in his start as he struck out seven batters over six innings and only allowed one run on scattered four hits. Sadly, Manny Martinez allowed a whopping three earned runs in his 1.2 innings of work. Jacob Morris closed out the game with a perfect 1.1 innings.
Blair Walters will take the mound for the Dash against Salem on Thursday.
Kannapolis 1, West Virginia 0
Tanner Banks is the star of the day as the 24-year-old lefty threw a shutout where he only allowed four base hits and one walk to his five strikeouts. It was, according to the Intimidators, the first 9-inning complete game shutout the team has had since at least 2005.
The offense didn’t out-perform West Virginia by much – they only mustered six hits, with two each for Grant Massey (who had the lone RBI and extra base), Cody Daily and Danny Mendick.
Johnathan Frebis will pitch on Thursday.
