Charlotte 8, Gwinnett 5 (10 innings)
Southpaw Matt Purke made his first start of the 2016 season in what seemed to be a staff day for the Knights (Miguel Gonzalez had been slated to start originally – no word given as to why that changed). Purke pitched three innings, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Will Lamb pitched very well in relief, going 3.1 innings without giving up a run and surrendering just two hits. Daniel Webb got the win in relief, pitching the tenth inning where he gave up one run (unearned) on two hits with a strikeout. Offensively, the damage was done by the Knights in the ninth and tenth innings, where they combined for seven of their eight runs. Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Jason Coats tied it up with a two run home run. On the night, Coats went 2 for 4 with a triple, home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Pinch hitter Danny Hayes won the game in the bottom of the tenth in walk off fashion, launching a grand slam, his first of the season. It was an incredible comeback and the most exciting game for the Knights so far this season.
Chris Volstad looks to continue his great start of the season, as he will be on the mound in game one of a three game set with the Toledo Mudhens tonight.
Chattanooga 4, Birmingham 0
Tyler Danish had a nice start for the Barons, going 6.1 innings while giving up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Matt Lollis also did a nice job out of the bullpen, pitching a scoreless eighth inning while striking out two. The Barons did not amount of much at the plate, as they were only able to muster five hits. Eudy Pina, Trey Michalczewski, Jake Peter, Jeremy Dowdy, and Joey DeMichele each had one hit on the night.
Carson Fulmer returns to the mound tonight, where he will face the Lookouts in game two of a five game set.
Winston-Salem 13, Salem 8
Spencer Adams started for the Dash, but struggled in his five innings of work. He gave up six runs on nine hits, while striking out three. Danny Dopico pitched a scoreless inning in relief while striking out one. It was an offensive explosion for the Dash, as they had an incredible 20 hits on the night. Gerson Montilla had a night to remember, as he hit for the cycle while driving in five and scoring four runs. Marcus Davis went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Louie Lechich went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Nick Basto went 4 for 6 with two runs scored, and Hunter Jones, Brett Austin, and Mason Robbins each had two hits as well.
Matt Cooper makes the start tonight for the Dash, who will square off with the Red Sox in game three of a four game set.
Delmarva 10, Kannapolis 4
It was not a good night on the mound for the Intimidators, as Luis Martinez made the start. He lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on five hits, while striking out three. The lone bright spot pitching wise came from Jaider Rocha, who hurled 2.1 hitless innings in relief while striking out three. Offensively, Grant Massey had a nice night, going 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Seby Zavala went 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored, and Zach Fish, Louis Silverio, and Danny Mendick each had one RBI.
Southpaw Ryan Riga will make the start tonight against the Shorebirds, in game three of a four game series.
