It’s been a rough start to the year for the farm system and Wednesday wasn’t much better. Charlotte had some late game heroics but fell flat, Winston-Salem was blown out and Kannapolis held on to avoid a Sox farm system sweep.
Columbus 7, Charlotte 6
The Knights fell to the Clippers, trailing 6-2 until Daniel Fields launched a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs in the eighth – until Michael Ynoa gave up the winning run in the ninth. Leading the way with Fields were Danny Hayes and Carlos Sanchez with two hits apiece as Sanchez’s batting average now sits at .309 – he also swiped two bases this game. Jacob May had the other extra base hit for the team after Fields, going 1-4 with a double, run and a walk.
Jacob Turner had to be eyeing Chicago’s fifth spot in the rotation after Miguel Gonzalez failed to impress, but the righty gave up four runs in only 4.2 innings while walking five. Still, his ERA is sitting at 2.49, but this start was a setback. Other than Turner and Ynoa, Matt Purke pitched 2.1 innings of two run ball, though he did strike out three.

Lynchburg 12, Winston-Salem 6
The good news: Mason Robbins had a cycle as he went 4-4 with 2 runs scored and three RBIs while Nick Basto‘s hot start continued as he went 2-3 with a double, homer, walk and two RBIs as he kept his .416 average going strong. Robbins’ cycle was the 2nd for the Dash in just 5 days, after they had gone (per the club) 2,900 days without one.
The bad news: Blair Walters got knocked around in only four innings of work – allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks, though he did get four strikeouts. Manny Martinez fared no better, giving up four runs in one inning off two homers.
Spencer Adams looks to get the team back on track tomorrow.
Kannapolis 4, Augusta 3
Johnathan Frebis kept the team in this one, allowing only two runs on two hits and two walks (compared to three strikeouts) in his 6.1 innings of work (and had a no-hitter going through 6 innings). Brannon Easterling went the next 2.1 innings, only giving up an unearned run while Alex Katz got the very rare one-out save.
Cody Daily led the offense as he went 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI while Micker Adolfo had a good day in right going 2-4 with an RBI of his own. Dante Flores and Antonio Rodriguez contributed the other two runs.
