Charlotte 10, Columbus 4
Starter Jacob Turner tossed five innings to earn the win and received plenty of run support as the Knights raced past Columbus. The Knights offense wasted no time jumping all over Columbus starter TJ House as the first eight batters reached base. Shortstop Tim Anderson started the 1st inning with a walk and ended up with his best game of the season at the plate, going 2-3 with two walks. Danny Hayes went 3-4 with a double and has been on fire recently, hitting .500 (13-26) since starting the season on a 0-24 skid. Jacob May also had a solid game, going 2-3 with a walk and two RBI’s.
Charlotte’s decisive win snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Columbus Clippers. Chris Volstad will take the mound on Tuesday to attempt to start a losing streak for Columbus.
Pensacola 6, Birmingham 3
Brandon Brennan was a late scratch and spot-starter Nolan Sanburn struggled as the Barons fell to Pensacola in the finale of their series on Monday. Sanburn allowed five hits and walked three over three innings, but did limit the damage to two runs. The Birmingham bullpen didn’t fare much better, as James Dykstra, Robinson Leyer, and Matt Lollis were all scored upon during their appearances.
The Barons offense struggled as a whole, but there was good individual performances. Nick Delmonico continued his hot hitting ways by going 2-4 and upped his season batting average to .373. Eddy Alvarez had his second consecutive multi-hit day as he went 2-4 with a walk and Adam Engel walked twice and stole his 11th and 12th base of the season.
Birmingham has an off-day on Tuesday before hitting the road against the Montgomery Biscuits on Wednesday. Tyler Danish will get the start and will be seeking his 3rd win of the year.
Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 2 (11 innings)
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored an unearned run in the top of the 11th to escape Winston-Salem with a win on Monday. Myrtle Beach scored two runs in the top of the 1st and held onto that lead until Nick Basto smacked his 5th home run of the season to tie things up. Basto leads all of Minor League Baseball in hits (40) and has been a revelation this season.
Dash starter Blair Walters settled down after the first and threw four shutout innings until he departed for reliever Jacob Morris. Morris was fantastic in his appearance, throwing three shutout innings and only allowing one hit.
The Dash return to action Tuesday against Myrtle Beach hoping for revenge with Spencer Adams getting the ball.
Kannapolis 5, Columbia 0
The last time Johnathan Frebis started, the 6’3” lefty took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. This outing was much shorter, he pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit before being pulled after an hour long rain delay. However, his bullpen was magical as Drew Hasler tossed three perfect innings and was followed by two more perfect innings from Ryan Hinchley. Matt Ball struck out the side in the 8th and got the first two outs of the 9th before allowing a hit, which snapped a streak of 24 consecutive batters retired. Ball quickly composed himself and got the final out, completing the two-hitter.
Cody Daily and Cleuluis Rondon both had multiple hits on the night and Micker Adolfo drove in an run and walked but had to exit the game after suffering a hand injury. Keep an eye on the FutureSox twitter feed for an update on the severity of Adolfo’s injury.
Kannapolis has Tuesday off but will return home to face the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday with Luis Martinez getting the start.
