Charlotte 12, Norfolk 3
Chris Beck made the start for the Knights, and he did not disappoint, firing six scoreless innings while giving up five hits and striking out six. After a rough start to the 2016 season, Beck has now turned in two consecutive quality starts. Tommy Kahnle had a nice relief appearance as well, as he threw a hitless inning in relief with one strikeout. The bats exploded for the Knights, as they had an impressive 19 hits on the day. Tim Anderson stayed red hot, as he went 4 for 5 with four runs scored and a solo home run, his first of the season. Leury Garcia also had a day at the plate, as he went 4 for 6 with three runs scored. Other notable offensive performances include Andy Parrino, who went 3 for 5 with a triple and four RBIs, and J.B. Shuck and Daniel Fields, who each had two hits.
Jacob Turner takes the mound tomorrow night, as the Knights begin a three game set with the Durham Bulls in Charlotte.
Birmingham 7, Jackson 3
Southpaw David Holmberg made the start for the Barons, as he lasted 4.2 innings while giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Kyle Hansen and Brian Clark were stellar out of the pen, as they combined for 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. Hansen went 2.1 innings and earned the win, giving up two hits while striking out five. Clark was his normal self, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth innings while giving up two hits and striking out three. He now has an incredible 0.47 ERA on the season, as he has given up one earned run in 19.1 innings of work. The Barons trailed 3 to 0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but were able to put up a crooked number, scoring seven runs. Courtney Hawkins was activated from the disabled list earlier today, and he returned in a big way, going 2 for 4 with a double and a grand slam, his first of the season. Eddy Alvarez and Jake Peter also played pivotal roles at the plate, as they both went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
The Barons and Generals meet tomorrow night for the final game of a five game set, as a starter has yet to be announced for the Barons.
Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 0
Thaddius Lowry turned in his best start of the season, as he went seven innings while giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Unfortunately, Lowry was not rewarded for his efforts, as the bats went silent for the Dash. Lead off man Adam Engel was a bright spot offensively, as he went 2 for 4 with a double. Gerson Montilla, Mason Robbins, and Toby Thomas each had one hit on the night as well.
Jordan Stephens will take the bump in the first game of a four game series with the Potomac Nationals, as he looks to win his first game of the season.
Kannapolis 5, Hagerstown 1
Zach Thompson was brilliant once again, as he went six innings, giving up one run (unearned) on three hits and seven strikeouts. Over his last three starts (18 innings), all of which he has won, he has given up just one earned run, six hits, and has struck out 14. Drew Hasler and Taylore Cherry were excellent out of the bullpen, as they combined for three scoreless innings. At the plate, Johan Cruz led the way, going 2 for 4 with two runs and a two-run home run, his first of the season. Catcher Seby Zavala had a nice night offensively, as he went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a walk. Tyler Sullivan, Corey Zangari, Antonio Rodriguez, Michael Suiter, and Landon Lassiter all had one hit as well.
The Intimidators and Suns meet again tomorrow night, as southpaw Tanner Banks will start and look to go 7 and 0 on the season.
