Charlotte 5, Durham 4 (12 innings)
Anthony Ranaudo, acquired from the Texas Rangers on Thursday, bested reigning Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year Blake Snell in his White Sox debut. Ranaudo struck out four over four innings and a 1st inning solo home run was the only blemish against him. Â Meanwhile, the Charlotte offense got to Snell early, scoring three runs in the first highlighted by a Matt Davidson RBI single. The Knights would hold that lead until the top of the 9th where Tommy Kahnle coughed up two runs to give Durham a 4-3 advantage. However, Charlotte came right back and tied it in the bottom of the 9th to send the game to extras and eventually pushed across the winning run via a walk-off wild pitch in the 12th.
Tim Anderson snapped a seven game hitting streak with a night he would like to forget, going 0-6 with three strikeouts. Brad Goldberg pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Terance Marin got the win by throwing a scoreless 12th inning.
The Knights host Rochester Monday night and will send Erik Johnson to the hill.
Tennessee 12, Birmingham 4
After stringing together a few very solid starts, 21 year-old Jordan Guerrero was rocked on Sunday, giving up six runs on eight hits over just three innings. James Dykstra and Brock Huntzinger couldn’t stop the bleeding and each gave up three more runs, as the Barons didn’t record a scoreless inning until the 7th.
Nicky Delmonico tripled and Courtney Hawkins doubled and walked to lead the offense.
These two teams face off again on Monday with Carson Fulmer getting the start.
Potomac 13, Winston-Salem 6
It was an ugly night for Dash pitchers, as Brandon Brennan was lit up for eight runs on nine hits and four walks. The former 4th round draft pick is struggling badly this season, Brennan has a 11.17 ERA over three starts in Winston-Salem after being demoted from Birmingham. The bullpen didn’t fare much better, as the Potomac Nats piled on it to cruise to the win.
The offense preformed much better as Hunter Jones went 3-4 with a stolen base and third baseman Gerson Montilla went 2-5 with a three-run home run. Adam Engel continued his hot hitting by going 1-3 with a walk. Engel is hitting .400/.483/.560 since been demoted from Birmingham and hopefully is reestablishing some momentum.
Matt Cooper gets the start on Monday as the Dash will be looking for revenge against Potomac.
Hagerstown 6, Kannapolis 5
The Intimidators held a 5-2 advantage entering the 7th inning but the bullpen couldn’t hold as the Hagerstown Suns rallied for the win. Taylore Cherry was saddled with his first loss of the season, allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the 9th. Starter Luis Martinez struggled with his control, walking four batters and exiting after allowing two runs over 3.2 innings.
Landon Lassiter reached base in every plate appearance, going 1-1 with three walks. Lassiter has cooled down considerably since his hot April, but is still slashing an impressive .282/.393/.330. Antonio Rodriguez went 2-4 with a double and a walk and Daniel Mendick went 2-4 with a double.
Kannapolis will host Greensboro on Monday and will entrust Chris Comito to begin the series.
