Charlotte 3, Rochester 2 (11 innings)
Charlotte won on an extra inning walk-off for the second consecutive day and the streaking Knights now have won eight of their last nine ballgames. On Sunday, outfielder Daniel Fields scored from third on a wild pitch and Monday Fields was the hero again as he knocked in the winning run with an RBI single. Tim Anderson paced the offense from the lead-off position by going 3-5 and Matt Davidson went 2-4 and added a solo home run. Much has been said about Anderson’s hot hitting, but Davidson has hit .350 over his past ten games with three home runs and only eight strikeouts over 40 at bats.
Erik Johnson started the game and pitched very well, striking out eight batters and allowing two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings. After Johnson departed, the Charlotte bullpen was dominant, blanking Rochester over the remaining 4.1 innings. Blake Smith tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and was followed by a scoreless frame from Michael Ynoa and Will Lamb.
The Knights hope to continue their winning ways as Chris Beck will toe the rubber against Rochester on Tuesday.
Birmingham 3, Tennessee 2
With the game tied in the top of the 9th inning, Courtney Hawkins launched a towering home run to put Birmingham ahead. The Barons would add another insurance run in the 9th that eventually would be the difference, as they defeated the Cubs affiliate Tennessee Smokies on Monday night. Hawkins ended up 2-4 on the night with a double and the aforementioned home run and has hit in every game since returning from the DL on May 12th.
Carson Fulmer got the start and fired five scoreless innings and only allowed three hits. However, he walked five batters Monday after walking eight batters in his last outing. Brian Clark came on in relief and allowed his first run since April 19th but still pitched well, throwing 2.2 innings. Peter Tago gave up a run but held the lead, earning the win thanks to the Barons offense’s work in the top of the inning.
David Holmberg will take the mound against Tennessee in the finale of the series on Tuesday.
Potomac 9, Winston-Salem 3
Matt Cooper was roughed up for the first time this season as the Potomac Nats cruised to a win over the Dash on Monday. Cooper gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks. On the bright side, Manny Martinez fired off his best outing of the year, three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
The Dash offense was mostly held in check but Adam Engel went 2-5 with his 15th stolen base and Hunter Jones went 2-4 with a walk and his 16th stolen base of the season.
The Dash head to Myrtle Beach to begin a series with the Pelicans on Tuesday. Thad Lowry will get the start and is looking for his 2nd victory of the season.
Greensboro 3, Kannapolis 2
The Intimidators lost despite their pitchers only giving up four hits and one earned run. Starter Christopher Comito was the unfortunate recipient of a costly error that allowed two runs to score, otherwise he had an excellent start. Comito tossed five innings, walked one and allowed three hits. Reliever Ryan Riga had a great appearance to finish the game, allowing one hit over 2.1 scoreless innings.
First baseman Corey Zangari went 1-3 with a double and a walk and catcher Seby Zavala added two hits.
The Intimidators will be seeking revenge on Tuesday as they send Zach Thompson to the mound.
