Gwinnett 4, Charlotte 1
The Gwinnett Braves held the usually potent Knights offense in check as they earned the split of the two game series. Anthony Ranaudo pitched well again in his second start with the Knights since being acquired from Texas. Ranaudo allowed one run on four hits over 4.2 innings and struck out three batters. The 6’7” righty has been lights out in the minors this year, striking out 25 batters and only walking 5 and allowing 13 hits while compiling a 2.05 ERA over 22 innings.
Another recently acquired player is paying immediate dividends for the Knights, journeyman Jason Bourgeois filled up the statline by going 2-3 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base. The former Sox farmhand is hitting a ridiculous .571 in his first four games back in the Sox organization. Tim Anderson went 1-3 with his 6th walk and catcher Omar Narvaez went 1-2 with two walks to raise his season line with Charlotte to .295/.385/.341.
In a schedule oddity, the Knights travel home to face Gwinnett for two more games after playing them twice on the road. Terance Marin gets the start and is hoping for his 4th win of the season.
Birmingham 3, Montgomery 0
After Jordan Guerrero was pegged with his worst outing of the season, he came back and did exactly what you want from a young pitcher and posted his best start of the season against The Montgomery Biscuits. Guerrero was masterful, striking out seven while only allowing three hits and two walks over six shutout innings. Brian Clark came in relief and tossed two scoreless innings and closer Peter Tago danced around two hits in the 9th to finish the game.
Trey Michalczewski drove in Jake Peter in the 4th inning for the games first run and then later scored after a leadoff triple in the 7th. Jake Peter went 2-3 with a walk and Jeremy Dowdy also went 2-3 in the winning effort.
The Barons and Biscuits continue their series Saturday and White Sox top pitching prospect Carson Fulmer will take the mound.
Salem 6, Winston-Salem 4
The last two times Spencer Adams has faced the loaded Salem Red Sox lineup were the worst starts of his season, as he gave up six runs in both appearances. However, Adams was ready on Friday night and he twirled seven excellent innings, giving up one earned run and struck out five. Unfortunately, reliever Euclides Leyer could not maintain the same success, and gave up four runs (three earned) while recording just two outs.
Third baseman Gerson Montilla blasted a two-run home run and Keon Barnum went 2-4 with a double to pace the offense.
These two teams will face off again Saturday and the starter for Winston-Salem will be Brandon Brennan.
The Kannapolis Intimidators were rained out on Friday and will play a doubleheader on Saturday against the Asheville Tourists with Luis Martinez getting the start in game 1 and Jack Charleston getting the ball in game 2.
