Gwinnett 9, Charlotte 3
It was an ugly night on the mound for the Knights, as they surrendered nine runs in a loss to the Gwinnett Braves. Terance Marin fell to 3 and 4 on the season, as he gave up two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. The lone bright spot pitching wise came from Phillippe Aumont, who pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball and struck out three of the four batters he faced. Offensively, the Knights had 11 hits on the night, but were only able to muster three runs. Danny Hayes had a triple and two RBIs, while J.B. Shuck had three hits including a double. Other notable offensive standouts included Jason Bourgeois, Jason Coats, and Leury Garcia, as each had a pair of hits on the night.
Scott Carroll makes the start in the final game in a four game series with the Braves this afternoon.
Montgomery 12, Birmingham 3
Carson Fulmer struggled mightily against the Biscuits, as he turned in possibly the worst start of his young professional career. He lasted just 2.1 innings and gave up nine runs (six earned) on eight hits. The control was better for Fulmer, who threw 35 of his 59 pitches for strikes and walked just one, but was obviously hit very hard. The bullpen struggled as well outside of Robin Leyer, who fired a scoreless 1.1 innings without giving up a hit. At the plate, Nick Delmonico hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, his eighth of the season. Joey DeMichele and Jake Peter had a hit and a RBI each, while Courtney Hawkins went 1 for 3 with a double.
Southpaw David Holmberg will toe the rubber this afternoon against the Biscuits.
Winston-Salem 6, Salem 0
Three Dash pitchers combined for a two hit shutout, as they win in convincing fashion over the Red Sox. Brandon Brennan got the start and threw four scoreless innings while giving up just two hits. Manny Martinez followed, and was even better, as he fired four hitless innings while striking out four. Danny Dopico came on in the ninth and punched out two. It was a nice night at the plate for the Dash, as eight of nine starters had at least one hit. Ryan Leonards hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Adam Engel and Hunter Jones both had two hits, including a triple for each. Cleuluis Rondon had two hits, while Marcus Davis, Toby Thomas, and Brett Austin each had a double.
The Dash return to action this afternoon with the Red Sox, and a starter has yet to be announced.
Asheville 3, Kannapolis 2 (Game 1; 9 innings)
The Intimidators dropped a wild opening game of the doubleheader despite a strong start from Luis Martinez and some late game defensive heroics. Martinez threw five innings and only allowed a run on two hits, lowering his ERA to 4.50 on the season. Cody Daily blasted a solo home run to give Kannapolis the early lead in the seesaw game, but Taylore Cherry had his first blown save of the season to send the game to extras. Catcher Seby Zavala was in the middle of a couple of crazy plays at the plate as he was thrown out at home in the top of the 7th, then tagged out a would-be winning runner in the bottom of the 9th. However, after an intentional walk, the next Asheville batter singled home the winning run for the walk-off win.
Asheville 4, Kannapolis 2 (Game 2: 7 innings)
Jack Charleston started and got the loss, as he went three innings giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits. Southpaw Ryan Hinchley followed Charleston and lasted three innings, giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts. At the plate, the Intimidators only had five hits. Antonio Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the fifth. Michael Suiter had a hit and a RBI, while Tyler Sullivan, Johan Cruz, and Daniel Gonzalez each had a hit in the nightcap as well.
Chris Comito makes the start this afternoon in the final game of a four game series with the Tourists.
