Syracuse 10, Charlotte 6
Starter Jacob Turner was roughed up to the tune of eight runs over his 5.1 innings of work and the Knights dropped the opening game of the series to the Syracuse Chiefs. After starting the season strong with a 2.49 ERA over four stars in April, Turner has posted a 7.57 ERA during his last five starts in May.
Shortstop Tim Anderson paced the offense by going 2-4 with a double and a walk. Anderson’s season has been trending the exact opposite of Turner’s, after a poor April he has hit a ridiculous .371/.413/.515 in May. While the 22 year-old Anderson has been hot, 34 year-old Jason Bourgeois has been volcanic going 3-4 with a double and a triple to raise his average over six games with the Knights to .565. Bourgeois is hitting .394/.430/.528 over 39 games combined between AAA Reno and Charlotte and the veteran appears hungry to get back to the majors.
Charlotte’s lineup was bolstered by three new players on Monday, as Nick Delmonico made his debut from Birmingham (0-4, BB), Kevan Smith played his first game since being activated off the DL (0-3, BB), and Carlos Sanchez joined the Knights from the White Sox (0-4, RBI).
Chris Volstad and the Knights will be looking to even the series on Wednesday.
Frederick 7, Winston-Salem 1
Starter Jordan Stephens was cruising until a 6th inning two-run home run chased him from the ballgame. Stephens has an unsightly ERA (5.31) but his K/BB ratio is strong at 39/16 and he is nearly striking out a batter per inning so there is cause for optimism. Reliever Kelvis Valerio allowed three more runs to score as the rout was on for the Frederick Keys.
Hunter Jones was a bright spot for the Dash, as he blasted his 3rd home run of the season and legged out his 6th triple. Jones is a little old for A+ at 24, but he is putting up solid numbers .297/.383/.456 with 21 steals and playing good defense in CF.
The Dash will send Spencer Adams to the mound looking for revenge against Frederick on Wednesday.
Lexington 3, Kannapolis 1
Tanner Banks matched his career high with six strikeouts, but the Kannapolis offense couldn’t muster much support for their starting pitcher as the Intimidators fell on Tuesday. Banks allowed three runs to score over his 6.2 innings and reliever Taylore Cherry took care of the rest of the game with 1.1 perfect innings.
Lexington starter Julio Pinto was knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning when an Antonio Rodriguez liner hit him on the arm, but the Lexington bullpen had no problems the rest of the game. Second baseman Grant Massey went 2-3 and Landon Lassiter went 1-3 with an RBI.
Johnathan Frebis will take the ball as the Intimidators hope to bounce back on Wednesday.
