The Charlotte Knights got the win behind a glowing Anthony Ranaudo start, while Tim Anderson and Jason Coats added to their resumes in an effort to see Chicago. The Birmingham Barons were felled by Chattanooga as Tyler Danish struggled, while the Kannapolis Intimidators lost in extra-innings.
Charlotte 7, Syracuse 4
The Charlotte Knights moved a game above .500 behind a solid showing from some notable names. Anthony Ranaudo, acquired from the Texas Rangers a couple weeks ago, shined through seven innings, giving up just one run on three hits. The righty also notched five strikeouts to zero walks. Tim Anderson continues to force the issue from Charlotte, going 2-for-5 with a double. Jason Coats turned in a 2-for-3 night, with a walk and a triple, raising his batting average to .331. Austin Jackson could return to action this weekend, but if he needs a DL stint, Coats is making a strong case to see Chicago. Jason Bourgeois and recently promoted Nick Delmonico went yard to give Ranaudo all the firepower he needed to get the “W”.
The Knights will go for the sweep tomorrow night behind Scott Carroll at BB&T ballpark.
Chattanooga 10, Birmingham 6
Tyler Danish got lit up over 4.1 innings, surrendering six earned runs on six hits, while posting five strikeouts to two walks.The rough outing raised his ERA to 4.61 at Double-A Birmingham this season. The offense faired better with Adam Engel showing some life, going 2-for-5 with a double. Jake Peter went 3-for-4 while Trey Michalczewski hit his third home run of the season. Catcher Jeremy Dowdy also went yard but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome Danish’s struggles.
The Barons will look to bounce back versus Chattanooga tomorrow at 12:30 PM in Birmingham with Jordan Guerrero on the bump. This is the annual Rickwood Classic, where the Barons play at historic Rickwood Park, their home from 1910 to just a few years ago.
Augusta 6, Kannapolis 5 (17 innings)
Kannapolis lost a 17-inning marathon against Augusta. Luis Martinez had a rough first inning, giving up four runs (2 earned). He cruised for the next four frames, ending the night with seven strikeouts and two walks across five innings. CF Tyler Sullivan went 4-for-7 while DH Johan Cruz got two RBIs via a fielder’s choice and sac fly. Landon Lassiter continued a strong season, going 3-for-7 to raise his season average to .304. 1B Corey Zangari is mired in a rough patch, going 0-for-8 with four strikeouts. Zangari has eight home runs in his first try at Single-A ball, but is hitting just .176 on the season.
The Intimidators will try to close out the series on a high note with Chris Comito getting the ball tomorrow night.
