Charlotte 5, Syracuse 3
Jason Coats, Matt Davidson and Danny Hayes powered the Knights to victory over the Chiefs. Davidson was 3-3 with a walk, double, RBI and no strikeouts while Coats and Hayes each collected one hit – a homer. Coats hit a solo shot and raised his average to .331 and Hayes knocked in two. Vinny Rottino went 2-2 with a homer and walk of his own.
On the pitching side Scott Carroll carried a no-hitter into the fifth, before giving up two runs on two walks on two hits with two strikeouts. Chris Beck won the game in relief, surrendering one run in his two innings of work. Michael Ynoa threw a perfect ninth for the save, striking out two along the way.
Erik Johnson looks to keep things rolling tomorrow against Lehigh Valley.
Chattanooga 7, Birmingham 4
It was the annual Rickwood Classic, with the Barons playing at historic Rickwood Field, their home for most of their existence since it was built in 1910. Adam Engel and Jake Peter led the way for the offense in this one as Peter notched three RBIs off of his double while Engel went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Eudy Pina went 2-4 with a homer and Keenyn Walker went 1-3 with a double.
Meanwhile, Jordan Guerrero wasn’t able to turn in a great start – four runs over seven innings off of six hits, two walks and zero strikeouts. Peter Tago threw the last two innings and gave up three runs while striking out four.
Carson Fulmer will try to right his own ship as well as the team’s tomorrow.
Carolina 3, Winston-Salem 0
Marcus Davis got the only extra base hit for the hapless Dash, going 1-3 with a walk and double. Mason Robbins and Keon Barnum each went 2-4 and Hunter Jones turned in the last single, leaving the offense scoreless.
Brandon Brennan was the tough luck loser – nine innings, three runs and seven strikeouts. With no run support, it has to remind Sox fans of Jose Quintana to a degree.
Matt Cooper will hopefully get the team to bounce back as he remains a surprising development in the minors.
August 8, Kannapolis 1
Rough day for the Intimidators. Danny Mendick was able to turn in the only run after going 2-4 with a double. Grant Massey also went 2-4 while Landon Lassiter, Carlos Perez and Corey Zangari each had a single. Zangari meanwhile, struck out three times.
Chris Comito fared no better on the mound than the team did at the plate. Comito surrendered seven runs, six earned, on 4.2 innings pitched with only two strikeouts and ten hits.
Zach Thompson will lead the Intimidators against Charleston on Thursday.
