The starters did their job on the farm tonight, as all four had quality starts but only two were victorious in Chris Volstad and Thaddius Lowry. Carson Fulmer had a season high ten strikeouts and only walked one, and Gerson Montilla led the way offensively for Winston-Salem with a triple and his eighth home run of the season.
Charlotte 3, Scranton Wilkes-Barre 2
Chris Volstad earned his fifth win of the season after firing seven innings of two-run ball while striking out three. Michael Ynoa threw a scoreless eighth and was followed by Tommy Kahnle, who threw a hitless ninth and earned his fourth save of the season. At the plate, Danny Hayes led the way with a double and two RBIs, while Carlos Sanchez and Matt Davidson each had a pair of hits. With tonight’s win, the Knights return to .500, as they are now 31-31 on the season.
The Knights are off tomorrow night before they head to Buffalo Saturday for a double header with the Bisons.
Mobile 9, Birmingham 3
Carson Fulmer turned in his second consecutive quality start, as he went 6.2 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) with ten strikeouts, a season high. He also walked just one, which is great to see as his control has been an issue this season. Offensively, Jake Peter had a pair of singles, while Adam Engel, Eddy Alvarez, and Nick Basto all had a hit and a RBI.
The Barons head to Biloxi tomorrow night to start a five game series. A starter has yet to be announced.
Winston-Salem 3, Carolina 2
Thaddius Lowry was brilliant while earning his fifth win of the year, going seven innings and giving up just one run and striking out five. The bullpen was terrific, as Colin Kleven fired a scoreless eighth and was followed by Kelvis Valerio, who earned his first save of the season after a scoreless ninth. Gerson Montilla was the main catalyst offensively for the Dash, as he had a triple and a solo home run, his eighth of the season. Keon Barnum had a pair of hits and a RBI, and Marcus Davis and Chris O’Dowd each had a base knock.
The Dash return to action tomorrow night with the Mudcats, and Jordan Stephens will make the start.
Hickory 1, Kannapolis 0
Johnathan Frebis was excellent in his start, but it did not amount to anything as the southpaw suffered the undeserving loss. He lasted six innings, giving up one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. The bullpen was great as well, as Alex Katz and Yelmison Peralta combined for three hitless innings. The Intimidators outhit the Crawdads four to three on the night, but it did not show on the scoreboard. Landon Lassiter, Johan Cruz, Danny Mendick, and Antonio Rodriguez each had a single.
Zach Thompson is on the bump tomorrow night was the Intimidators and Crawdads square off in game two of a four game set.
