The Birmingham Barons helped the affiliates avoid a sweep with a big night against Biloxi. Both sides of the ball were clicking for the Barons, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for Charlotte, Winston-Salem, or Kannapolis. All three saw their offense disappear in disappointing fashion.
Norfolk 4, Charlotte 1
Jacob Turner got the loss for the Knights, giving up two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings. Five strikeouts to one walk was encouraging, and Turner continues to be one of the key depth arms in this organization. The Knights had a tough draw, facing the rehabbing Yovani Gallardo. They were consequently limited to just two hits, with their sole run coming on a Carlos Sanchez solo shot. Danny Hayes went 0-for-1 with a strikeout, but collected two walks. With J.B. Shuck playing uninspiring ball in Chicago and Austin Jackson on the mend, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Hayes in the Windy City at some point.
The Knights hand the ball to Chris Volstad tomorrow in an attempt to bounce back against Norfolk.
Birmingham 9, Biloxi 2
Lefty David Holmberg went the distance for the Barons with a quality start. He gave up two runs through six innings and compiled five strikeouts for good measure. Peter Tago and Brock Huntzinger were flawless in relief as they combined for eight strikeouts over three frames. The offense wasn’t about to be outdone. Eight out of nine Barons collected a hit. Adam Engel is settling into Birmingham and was the owner of two knocks and two walks on the night. Keon Barnum has gone off the radar a bit but his 2-for-5 night included a double and he raised his season average to .294.
Carson Fulmer is coming off arguably his best start of the season (10 K to 1 BB) and will look to build on that promising outing when he toes the rubber against Biloxi.
Wilmington 3, Winston-Salem 1
Matt Cooper has been a strikeout artist all season but had an uninspiring start for the Dash. He threw just five innings, surrendering three runs on 4 hits, 3 walks, and just three whiffs. The Dash saw their offense get shutdown by Wilmington four hits on the evening, none for extra bases.
Righty Thad Lowry will try to right the ship tomorrow in his start against Wilmington.
Delmarva 3, Kannapolis 1
Chris Comito had a mediocre outing and was pinned with the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings. The Intimidators’ offense was about as lifeless as the dash. They tallied only five hits, also failing to post one for extra bases. Landon Lassiter raised his average to .303 with a one-for-four night while Ryan Riga had three strikeouts over two innings out of the pen.
Johnathan Febris will do his part tomorrow to get the Intimidators back on track against Delmarva.
