Three of four teams on the White Sox farm were victorious, while Kannapolis lost an absolute heart-breaker as they led by one heading into the bottom of the ninth. Terance Marin and Spencer Adams were lights-out in their starts, as Marin went seven scoreless while Adams hurled eight scoreless innings. Trey Michalczewski had a big night offensively for the Barons, while the long-ball helped lead the way offensively in Winston-Salem’s win.
Charlotte 1, Norfolk 0
Terance Marin earned his fifth win of the season. The right-hander fired seven scoreless innings, giving up just six hits and striking out three. The bullpen did their job too, as Chris Beck threw a scoreless eighth getting the hold, and was followed by Tommy Kahnle, who shut down the Tides in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
The Knights only had one run on the night, but that’s all they would need. Matt Davidson drove in Jason Bourgeois in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, their only run of the day. Bourgeois was the main factor behind the Knights offense, as he had three hits, including a double, a run scored, and two stolen bases. He is now hitting an incredible .426 in 94 at bats since joining the Knights last month. Danny Hayes, Andy Parrino, Brett Hayes, and Leury Garcia all had one hit in the game as well.
Anthony Ranaudo starts tonight as the Knights and the Indianapolis Indians begin a three game set in Charlotte.
Birmingham 5, Mississippi 2
Southpaw Jordan Guerrero got the start and did a nice job in six innings, giving up two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts, but also walked five. James Dykstra was stellar in his three scoreless innings of work out of the pen, and he got the win while giving up just two base knocks.
It was a nice game offensively for the Barons, as they had ten hits on the night. The game was tied 2 to 2 heading into the bottom of the 7th, but the Barons scored one in the seventh followed by two in the eighth en route to victory. Trey Michalczewski led the way, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Adam Engel had a pair of hits and stole his 20th base of the season, while Marcus Lemon had a double and one RBI on the night. Other contributors included Jeremy Dowdy, Keon Barnum, and Jake Peter, who all had one hit and one RBI.
Brandon Brennan takes the ball tonight as the Barons and Braves square off in game three of a five game series.
Winston-Salem 7, Salem 1
Spencer Adams was incredible, putting up eight innings of scoreless ball while giving up just three hits and punching out four. Friend of FutureSox Jonathan Cook was there first hand to see Adams, and said that he commanded his fastball very well and used his offspeed pitches in payoff situations much more frequently than he did in prior outings he had seen him. He also kept Red Sox fourth best prospect Rafael Devers in check, as he was hitless on the night and was behind on all of Adams’ offerings. Starts like these show you why Adams is one of the White Sox’s premier prospects, as the sky is the limit with this young right-hander.
The long-ball was the driving force behind the Dash offense tonight, as they launched three home runs in the contest. Hunter Jones had two hits and three RBIs, while hitting his first home run of the season in the bottom of the first. Nick Basto blasted a solo shot in the third, his seventh of the season, while Toby Thomas also had a solo jack, his fourth. Gerson Montilla had a double on the night, while Cleuluis Rondon also doubled and had a RBI and run scored.
The Red Sox and Dash return to action tonight, and southpaw Tanner Banks is set to make the start.
Lakewood 5, Kannapolis 4
Brannon Easterling got the start for the Intimidators, going five innings and giving up three runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Ryan Riga followed and fired two scoreless innings of relief. Yelmison Peralta got the loss, going 1.2 innings and giving up two runs in the bottom on the ninth on a walk off two-run single from Blue Claws second baseman Josh Tobias.
The Intimidators had 11 hits in the game, and were led by Landon Lassiter, who had a pair of hits including a solo home run, his first of the season. Other main contributors were Seby Zavala, who had two hits, including a double and one RBI, and Antonio Rodriguez, who singled and had one RBI. Cody Daily and Danny Mendick both had two hits, and Johan Cruz had a triple and run scored as well.
Luis Martinez starts tonight in game two of a four game set with Lakewood.
