Two affiliates were victims of rainouts on Monday and three others probably wish they had been postponed. Overall it was an uninspiring night for the system. Not to be lost though is a strong night from Courtney Hawkins and a solid relief appearance by Zack Burdi.
Charlotte Knights vs. Durham Bulls – Rained out
Mobile 8, Birmingham 5
James Dykstra got the loss for the Barons, surrendering five earned runs over four innings pitched. The offense wasn’t able to muster enough support as Birmingham was good for eleven strikeouts on the night. Courtney Hawkins earned prospect team of the week honors over at MLB Pipeline and he reaffirmed that decision with a stellar performance in Mobile. Coming off a five RBI game yesterday, Hawkins went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. It’s a pleasant stretch for the outfielder with big time power but enough swing-and-miss in his game to quell the hype.
Jordan Guerrero will try to rebound from his most recent outing when he toes the rubber for Birmingham tomorrow.
Potomac 5, Winston-Salem 1
Starter Kelvis Valerio had a pedestrian game for the Dash. He was tagged for nine hits over six innings, giving up four runs in the process. Marcus Davis and Toby Thomas were the majority of the offense as each went 2-for-4. Thomas’ hits included a double and triple. A notable arm made a relief appearance for Winston-Salem as Zack Burdi covered a scoreless inning and recorded a strikeout.
Jordan Stephens is coming off a pair of excellent starts and will look to continue that trend tomorrow in Potomac.
Kannapolis Intimidators vs. Rome Braves – Rained out
Billings 8, Great Falls 2
The Voyagers had a disastrous night on defense. Corey Zangari had three throwing errors, so starter Chirs Comito’s line looks a lot worse on account of four unearned runs. Seven strikeouts to just one walk is promising for Comito even if he did give up ten hits over five frames. 2016 third-rounder Alex Call went 0-for-2 but countered two strikeouts with three walks. Other 2016 draftee Aaron Schnurbusch went 1-for-4 with two whiffs and a double. Second baseman Jake Jarvis went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Tomorrow’s starter for the Voyagers is listed as TBD.
AZL Padres 4, AZL White Sox 3
Lefty Jhoan Quijada just missed a quality start, giving up three runs over five innings. 2016 7th rounder Bernardo Flores gave up a run on four hits, but struck out four over two innings pitched. Franklin Reyes went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Recent White Sox pick up and former Yankees top prospect Slade Heathcott hit a double on a rehab assignment. Familiar face Fernando Tatis Jr. (dealt in the James Shields package) had a little payback for his old organization. He turned in a 3-for-4 night with a home run and two RBIs.
