It was a very successful day for the White Sox affiliates as five out of the six teams in action were victorious and it included a great outing in the Futures Game by Carson Fulmer. Three White Sox affiliates (Barons, Intimidators, Voyagers) had every starting member of the lineups record at least one hit on Sunday.
World 11, USA 3
White Sox prospect Carson Fulmer was selected to represent the USA in the prestigious MLB Futures Game held in San Diego as a kickoff to the All-Star festivities. With the eyes of the scouting world on him, Fulmer did not disappoint, as he struck out the first two batters he faced in route to a perfect 1-2-3 inning. Fulmer had a slow start to the season, but has been fantastic recently with a 0.95 ERA over his last three stars with 22 strikeouts, 10 hits, and nine walks over 19 innings.
Charlotte 5, Gwinnett 4
Chris Volstad pitched into the 8th inning and the Knights salvaged the series with a win going into the International League All-Star break. Volstad allowed four runs over 7.1 innings and departed in the 8th for Brad Smith. Closer Brad Goldberg worked around a hit to earn his 6th save of the season by tossing a scoreless 9th.
Volstad was supported by a three-run home run by second baseman Jake Peter. Peter is quietly having a great year, slashing .300/.373/.410 between Birmingham and Charlotte. Danny Muno also went deep and Slade Heathcott went 2-3 to help the Knights to victory.
Charlotte is hosting the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game, but the Knights won’t be back in action until Thursday.
Birmingham 7, Jacksonville 4
Every Baron in the lineup had a hit and Blair Walters had a stellar start for Birmingham to collect the win. Walters only allowed two hits and a walk over five shutout innings to earn the win. Eddy Alvarez was a catalyst for the Barons, going 2-4 with a double and a home run. Adam Engel also collected two hits and is hitting .356 over his last ten contests. Keon Barnum hit his 4th home run of the year and catcher Alfredo Gonzalez continues to swing a hot bat, going 2-4 with a double.
The Barons will continue their series against Jacksonville Monday with a little help, as Justin Morneau will be joining them while he continues his rehab assignment.
Frederick 5, Winston-Salem 4
Jordan Stephens struggled and was tagged for three runs over four innings. Stephens allowed six hits and three walks and gave way to Ryan Riga, who pitched well in a long relief role. First baseman Telvin Nash, a former 3rd round pick that the White Sox signed as a minor league free agent, hit two home runs and drove in all four of the Dash runs. Nash also homered Saturday, giving up three home runs over the weekend.
Reliever Manny Martinez allowed the go-ahead run to score in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win.
Kannapolis 10, Greensboro 2
The Intimidators jumped all over Greensboro for 16 hits and 10 runs to roll to the win. The offense was led by three-hit performances by shortstop Johan Cruz and outfielder Landon Lassiter. Cruz doubled and walked while Lassiter tripled and walked, both reached base four times. First baseman K.J. Woods, signed by the White Sox as a free agent in June, hit his 5th home run in just 17 games for the Intimidators. Seby Zavala doubled twice and third baseman Cody Daily homered.
Starter Johnathan Frebis went six strong innings, only allowing one run on five hits and a walk. 2016 draft pick Ben Wright tossed two scoreless innings to run his scoreless streak to 11.1 innings.
Kannapolis has an off day on Monday, but Zach Thompson will get the start on Tuesday as they begin a new series against Lexington.
Great Falls 13, Missoula 1
Starter Aaron McRee cruised through eight innings and the Voyagers offense went bonkers as they annihilated the Missoula Ospreys. At 1-2 and in the lineup, outfielders Alex Call and Jackson Glines set the tone for the rest of the lineup with great games. Call went 2-5 with a double and a home and Glines went 4-6 with a double, a home run, and six runs batted in. Third baseman Brady Conlan went 2-4 with a double and an RBI and is now hitting .344/.376/.531 in Great Falls.
AZL White Sox 6, AZL Athletics 3
White Sox 2nd round pick Alec Hansen dominated over three shutout innings of work, striking out six batters and the only blemish he endured was a walk. Hansen has only allowed one hit and no runs over his first seven professional innings. 18 year-old Luis Curbelo easily had his best professional game, as he went 3-4 with his 2nd home run of the season. Catcher Kevan Smith started and played his first game since hurting his back when he was called up the White Sox back in May. Smith was replaced by 19 year-old Carlos Perez, who proceeded to go 2-2 with his first home run of 2016.
