It was an exciting night on the farm, as both Birmingham and the AZL White Sox won in walk off fashion. Chris Volstad had his best start of the year, but still suffered the hard luck loss. Blair Walters and Luis Ledo were also terrific in their outings, as both young pitchers put together a quality start.
Indianapolis 1, Charlotte 0
Chris Volstad turned in his best outing of the year, but still suffered the hard luck and undeserving loss. The right hander went eight innings, giving up one run on just one hit with three strikeouts. The one hit unfortunately left the ballpark, as Indians left fielder Jose Osuna hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.
Offensively, the Knights wasted a brilliant pitching performance, as they were only able to muster out three hits on the night. Jason Coats, Jerry Sands, and Jake Peter each had a single.
Recently promoted southpaw David Holmberg is set to start tonight for the Knights in game two of four with Indianapolis.
Birmingham 3, Montgomery 2
Blair Walters was terrific in his start, as the young left-hander lasted seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Peter Tago came on in relief and earned his sixth win of the season, pitching two hitless innings and striking out four.
The Barons were down 2 to 0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but came back in convincing fashion by putting up a three spot and winning the game. Courtney Hawkins had a pair of hits and one RBI, and Keon Barnum went 1 for 4 with a walk off RBI single. Other contributors were Joey DeMichele, who tripled and drove in one, and Keenyn Walker, who had a double on the night.
The Barons and Biscuits square off again tonight and a starter has yet to be announced.
Potomac 4, Winston-Salem 2
Robin Leyer got the start for the Dash, and he gave up two runs on five hits over 3.2 innings. Manny Martinez stood out in relief, as he pitched two hitless innings while striking out one.
At the plate, lead off man Landon Lassiter had a pair of base knocks and two runs scored, while Mason Robbins had three hits and one RBI. Marcus Davis and Michael Suiter both had one hit as well, and Nick Basto drove in one in the loss.
The Dash and Nationals will meet again tonight, and Jordan Stephens will make the start.
Lakewood 4, Kannapolis 2
Max Beatty started and suffered the loss for the Intimidators, as he went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. The bullpen was solid, as Jack Charleston pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and was than followed by Mike Morrison who pitched a scoreless frame.
On the offensive side, Grant Massey had a pair of hits, including a double and a RBI, while Nate Nolan hit his first home run of the year since joining Kannapolis, a solo blast in the top of the third. Danny Mendick also contributed with a hit and a run scored, while Johan Cruz also had one base knock in the contest.
The Intimidators look to avoid the sweep against the Blue Claws tonight, and no starter has been announced.
Orem 5, Great Falls 3
Yosmer Solorzano made the start for the Voyagers, lasting just three innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. The bullpen did their job, as Kevin Escorcia gave up one unearned run over three innings, while Aaron Bummer and Richard McWilliams combined to throw two scoreless innings.
Brady Conlan had a night to remember for the Voyagers at the plate, as he went 4 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored. Frank Califano had two hits, while Mitch Roman and Aaron Schnurbusch both had one hit and a run scored each. Carlos Perez also played a role, driving in one in the game.
The Voyagers and Owls meet again tonight in game two of a four game set, and Aron McRee is set to make the start.
AZL White Sox 3, AZL Reds 2 (12 innings)
Luis Ledo was terrific in his start, firing six innings while giving up just one run on six hits with a pair of punch outs. The bullpen was terrific, as Danny Dopico, Evan Bell, and Ryan Boelter combined for six innings of one run ball (unearned run), with Boelter earning the win.
Offensively, eight of nine starters had at least one hit for the White Sox. Amado Nunez and Trevin Sonnier both had two hits, while Nunez drove home the game winning run on a walk off double. Third baseman Zach Remillard doubled and drove in one, while Luis Curbelo and Franklin Reyes both doubled as well. Lead off man Joel Booker also had one base knock and a run scored.
The White Sox meet up with the AZL Reds again tonight.
** Note: The contest between the DSL White Sox and DSL Blue Jays was postponed. They return to action against the DSL Padres today.
