Indianapolis 2, Charlotte 1
Charlotte’s scheduled starter was Anthony Ranaudo, but he was promoted thanks to the Chris Sale suspension. In Ranaudo’s stead, Terence Marin stepped in and spun a fantastic outing, tossing five shutout innings and only allowed three hits. Unfortunately for the Knights and Marin, reliever Matt Lollis blew a precarious 1-0 lead and Indianapolis rallied for the win.
Jason Coats went 1-4 and Jake Peter walked twice in an uneventful day for the offense.
The Knights start a new series Monday against Louisville and former Cincinnati ace, Homer Bailey.
Montgomery 6, Birmingham 4
Starter James Dyksta was knocked out after six runs scored during his four innings, but the Barons bullpen fired a shutout the rest of the way. Brandon Brennan threw two perfect innings, Brian Clark tossed two more scoreless, and Nolan Sanburn finished the game off with 1-2-3 9th inning.
Brady Shoemaker led the offense by going 2-4 with a home run and a double. The former White Sox draft pick spent time in the Miami Marlins organization before returning to the Barons on July 1st. Eddy Alvarez went 1-4 with a triple, Trey Michalczewski doubled, and Keon Barnum added two hits in the losing effort.
The Barons square off against the Mississippi Braves on Monday and have not yet announced a starter.
Potomac 7, Winston-Salem 6
Potomac rallied to nip the Dash in an ugly game that featured five errors for Winston-Salem. Dash starter Tanner Banks pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks. Unfortunately, Manny Martinez allowed three runs over his 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Catcher Zack Collins hit a solo home run and walked. It was Collins third home run for the Dash over just twelve games and he is hitting .294/.400/.618 during that span. Second baseman Toby Thomas went 4-5 with a double and a triple and third baseman Gerson Montilla went 3-5.
Thaddius Lowry will kick off a series with the Frederick Keys on Monday.
Delmarva 6, Kannapolis 3
Johnathan Frebis was extremely hittable over 3.2 innings and could not escape a five-run fourth inning. Frebis allowed all six runs and ten hits during his outing. Mike Morrison, who pro career was delayed because he was busy winning a National Championship with Coastal Carolina, tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and has no allowed a run over his first 6.1 innings.
Micker Adolfo had a much needed good day at the plate to lead the Intimidators offense. Adolfo went 1-2 with two walks but is scuffling in Kannapolis, hitting .196/.243/.287.
Brannon Easterling continues the series against Delmarva on Monday.
Great Falls 13, Orem 10
The Great Falls Voyagers won a slugfest over the Orem Owlz and it was thanks to some of their less heralded players. 2016 19th round draft pick Anthony Villa has had a slow start to the season but he broke out in a big way, going 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. 2016 12th round pick shortstop Mitch Roman went 3-6 with four (!) stolen bases and fellow middle infielder Max Dutto went 2-5 with a home run.
Bernardo Flores started the game and allowed four runs over five innings of work, which was good enough for the win. Reliever Fernando Gallegos pitched two perfect innings of relief.
AZL White Sox 7, AZL Rangers 6
The AZL Sox were trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the 8th, but a six-run inning propelled them to the victory. The inning was capped triumphantly by a grand slam by Zach Remillard. Luis Curbelo went 1-3 with a walk and second baseman Ricky Mota went 2-3 with a home run of his own.
Jhoan Quijada got the win and Brandon Agar closed the game out for his first save.
