Louisville 4, Charlotte 0
The Knights offense was silenced as the Louisville Bats handed Charlotte their eighth straight loss. Starter David Holmberg allowed four runs (three earned) in his second start for the Knights. Reliever Blake Smith tossed a scoreless inning and now has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances spanning 14.1 innings. The former position player was acquired from the Dodgers organization last season and may be finally putting it all together.
Jason Coats doubled and walked and Adam Engel went 1-3 and stole his first base for the Knights.
Charlotte is off on Thursday but will be back in action on Friday with Tyler Danish getting the start.
Birmingham 6, Mississippi 2
Starter Blair Walters and reliever Peter Tago combined to shutdown the Mississippi Braves and the offense pounded out ten hits to roll to the win. Walters allowed just one earned run over six innings and Tago took things from there, striking out five batters over three scoreless innings to earn the old fashion three inning save.
Catcher Alfredo Gonzalez led the offense by going 3-4 with a double and raised his season line to .357/.397/.429. Gonzalez was acquired from the Houston organization for cash when he was DFA’d after hitting .158/.236/.205 through 44 games for their AA affiliate. Trey Michalczewski went 2-5 with a double and Marcus Lemon also went 2-5.
The Barons and Braves continue their series Thursday as Spencer Adams takes the mound.
Winston-Salem 7, Frederick 6
The Dash jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to back-to-back-to-back home runs from Nick Basto, Marcus Davis, and Telvin Nash in the 1st inning. However, the Frederick Keys chipped away at that lead until finally Kelvis Valerio slammed the door with a 1-2-3 9th for his third save. Jordan Stephens started the game and was cruising until the 6th, where he was knocked out of the game after allowing three runs. Stephens struck out five and did not walk a batter during his 5.1 innings.
Landon Lassiter went 2-4 with a double and a walk and Mason Robbins doubled and tripled.
Zach Thompson will begin a new series on Thursday as the Dash take on Lynchburg.
Great Falls 6, Grand Junction 3
In a pitching match-up between an undrafted free agent and the 4th overall selection, the UDFA prevailed as Great Falls improved to 21-17. Aron McRee struck out seven batters and only allowed two runs on three hits and no walks to earn his fourth win of the year. McRee has a 2.64 ERA and has only issued two free passes over 44.1 innings this season.
The Voyager offense tagged Colorado’s 1st round pick Riley Pint with five runs on seven hits. Catcher Casey Schroeder led the way by going 3-4 with a double while Jameson Fisher, Jake Jarvis, and Mitch Roman added in two hits each.
Great Falls has the day off Thursday before starting a new series against Billings on Friday. The White Sox 2nd round pick Alec Hansen will make his third start for the Voyagers.
AZL Dodgers 8, AZL White Sox 7 (12 innings)
The AZL Sox allowed three unearned runs to score in the 9th and eventually dropped an extra inning affair to the Dodgers. The Sox had 13 hits and they were spread fairly evenly throughout their lineup, as no player had more than two hits. 18 year-old SS/2B Ricky Mota hit his third home in only his twelfth game this season and is hitting an impressive .293/.310/.561. Third baseman Maiker Feliz went 2-6 with a double and outfielder Joel Booker went 2-5 with a double and a walk to pace the offense.
