The Arizona League Sox had the night off and Great Falls and Winston-Salem were postponed due to weather.
Charlotte 2, Louisville 0
Charlotte pitcher (and independent league veteran) Terance Marin absolutely dominated the Louisville Bats, firing a complete game shutout and only allowed three hits, no walks, and struck out eight. Marin has struggled this season, but over his past two starts has thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, one walk, and six hits allowed. Marin is no stranger to long scoreless streaks, as he tore off 31.1 shutout innings last year. The Charlotte offense only had three hits, but they all went for extra bases as Kevan Smith homered and Nicky Delmonico and Vinny Rottino doubled to give Marin all the run support he needed.
Kameron Loe will toe the rubber for the Knights as the continue their series with Louisville on Wednesday.
Jackson 8, Birmingham 7
The Barons slugged 14 hits and built a 7-0 lead in the 4th inning only to see the Jackson Generals storm back and walk-off in the 9th. Starter James Dykstra pitched well, allowing three earned runs over six innings before departing for Peter Tago. Tago, who walked all four batters he faced in his last outing, walked three more to allow Jackson to tie the game. Colin Kleven then allowed the walk-off run to score in the bottom of the 9th.
Shortstop Eddy Alvarez‘s average continues to rise, as he went 3-4 with a triple and a walk. Alvarez is off to a scalding start in August, hitting .375/.500/.531. However, it wasn’t all good for Alvarez as he also committed two throwing errors. It was also a mixed bag for DH Courtney Hawkins, who walked and blasted his 9th home run, but also struck out three times. Hawkins is striking out in over 30% of his at bats this season. Trey Michalczewski followed up his big night Monday with another solid game, going 2-5 with a double.
The Barons are off Wednesday to lick their wounds, then Jordan Guerrero will start a new series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Thursday.
Kannapolis 4, Hagerstown 2
Starter Johnathan Frebis twirled 5.2 innings of one-run ball and Jack Charleston nailed down the end of the game for his fifth save to lead the Intimidators to the win. Frebis allowed five hits, one walk, and struck out three to earn his eighth win of the year. Charleston, who has the colorful nickname “Slim Reaper” due to his Chris Sale body type, has a 1.37 ERA over his last 19.2 innings.
Fan favorite Alex Call went 0-3 (gasp!), but don’t worry, he still contributed by coaxing two walks and stealing a base. Lead-off man Tyler Sullivan led the offense by going 3-5 with a double and Cody Daily added two hits and a walk.
Brannon Easterling will get the start as the Intimidators clash again with the Hagerstown Suns.
