Pitching was strong across the system in today’s contests as Chris Volstad led the pack with a 8-inning shutout. Nolan Sanburn and Bernardo Flores followed suit with quality starts of their own. In Charlotte Avisail Garcia hit a home run in his rehab stint, seemingly inching closer to a return. Michael Hickman went 4-for-4 for a perfect night down in Arizona.
Charlotte 3, Buffalo 0
Not only did Knights starter Chris Volstad throw a gem, but in the process he turned in his best start of the season. Volstad gave up just four hits over eight innings, walked one, and struck out five batters. Charlotte scratched together just enough offense to get Volstad the win. Nicky Delmonico went 1-for-4 with a double while Adam Engel added an RBI. The bulk of the scoring came on an Avisail Garcia home run. The rehabbing outfielder went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as he tries to heat up before presumably heading back to Chicago.
Carson Fulmer was disastrous in his first start with Charlotte. The White Sox are trying to stretch out Fulmer to give him a couple turns in the rotation in a lost season for the big league squad. To get that opportunity though, Fulmer will need to show some sort of promise when he faces Durham tomorrow.
Montgomery 3, Birmingham 2 (11 innings)
Nolan Sanburn tossed a quality start for the Barons. He went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits while racking up six strikeouts. Matt Cooper went three scoreless innings in relief getting a trio of strikeouts over that span. It was a sluggish night on offense for Birmingham. The club collected only five hits, while piling up twelve strikeouts to just two walks. Both scoring efforts came via the home run as Keenyn Walker and Courtney Hawkins each turned in 1-for-4 nights while going deep.
Blair Walters has had a recent stretch of three very rough outings so he’ll look to bounce back against Montgomery tomorrow.
West Virgina 5, Kannapolis 1
The Intimidators were victims of a rain-shortened game that resulted in a loss. Max Beatty did more than enough, compiling five innings of run one ball. Unfortunately, Kannapolis did very little on offense. Seby Zavala had the best night of the bunch, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run to comprise the entirety of the club’s scoring.
Luis Martinez is scheduled to start for the Intimidators tomorrow.
Great Falls 5, Helena 3
Bernardo Flores got the win behind an admirable start. He covered 6.2 innings of one run ball with as many strikeouts (5) as hits (5). Matt Foster has been electric all year and he would eventually earn the save for the Voyagers. The late-round 2016 draft pick has yet to give up an earned run since his promotion from the AZL. Mitch Roman raised his average to .300 with a 3-for-4 game that also saw him notch an RBI. Brady Conlan went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Aaron Schnurbusch stayed hot collecting two hits of his own, an RBI, and a free pass for good measure.
The Voyager’s starter is currently listed as TBD.
AZL Mariners 8, AZL White Sox 4
Andrés Sanchez got the loss as he fell victim to the long ball and surrendered six earned runs over as many innings. Louis Silverio accounted for all of AZL’s scoring with a grand slam. Meanwhile, Michael Hickman had a perfect night, going 4-for-4 with all of his hits going for singles.
