Charlotte 3, Durham 2 (10 innings)
Jerry Sands was the hero on Tuesday as he ripped a walk-off single to send the Knights to their 10th walk-off win of the year and maintained their half game lead over the Gwinnett Braves in their division.
Carson Fulmer only lasted an inning in his Charlotte debut, but his second start went much better. The 2015 first round pick only allowed one run on two hits and one walk over four innings. Tyler Barnette came on the 5th and provided a bridge to the later innings, where flame-throwing Zack Burdi struck out four batters over two shutout innings. Burdi has not allowed a run over his last 18.1 innings and unbelievably has only allowed five hits and struck out 29 during that span. Charlotte closer Brad Goldberg, who can reach the upper 90’s himself, came in and struck out two batters over a scoreless 10th inning.
David Holmberg will toe the rubber as the Knights hope to maintain or extend their first place lead against Durham on Wednesday.
Montgomery 4, Birmingham 0
Starter Blair Walters struck out six batters over 6.2 innings but received no run support from the Barons offense. Walters allowed two runs on five hits and three walks and the loss dropped his record to 4-6 with Birmingham.
Keenyn Walker led the offense from the lead-off spot by going 2-3 with a walk and Trey Michalczewski went 1-3 to account for all the hits the offense had.
Spencer Adams will look to help the Barons exact some revenge on Montgomery on Wednesday.
Winston-Salem 9, Frederick 5
Zack Collins blasted two home runs and walked twice in a monster game to lead the Dash over the Frederick Keys. Collins has been slumping a bit recently, but broke out in a big way Tuesday, and now has hit three homers over his last three contests. The 2016 10th overall pick is now slashing .260/.383/.500 over 30 games with the Dash and is showing the type of zone control that was advertised in college. Outfielder Landon Lassiter reach based four times, going 3-4 with a double and a walk to raise his OBP to match Collin’s at .383.
Starter Robinson Leyer got the win thanks to five innings of three-run ball and reliever Drew Hasler threw two scoreless innings in relief. Hasler has complied a 1.98 ERA between 68.1 innings in Kannapolis and Winston-Salem this year.
Jordan Stephens will start the game on Wednesday looking for the 7th win of the year.
Rome 6, Kannapolis 3
Alex Call went 1-3 with a walk and swiped two bags but it wasn’t enough as the Intimidators dropped the opening game of the series against Rome. Call, who recently spoke with FutureSox, is slumping a bit recently, hitting .162 over his last ten games.
Starter Luis Martinez allowed four runs to score over 5.2 innings and took the loss. Position player turned pitcher Louie Lechich struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings and has not given up a run yet over eight innings.
Jimmy Lambert will take the hill against the Rome Braves on Wednesday.
Great Falls 4, Helena 1
Chris Comito struck out eight batters over seven strong innings and the Great Falls offense pounded out thirteen hits to take the game against Helena. Comito only allowed three hits and one walk, and the only run he allowed was a solo home run.
Offensively, Joel Booker, Mitch Roman, and Max Dutto each had three hits. Additionally, Roman stole two bases and Aaron Schnurbusch doubled.
Aron McRee will get the start as the Voyagers continue their series against Helena on Wednesday.
AZL Dodgers 5, AZL White Sox 2
AZL Dodgers 3, AZL White Sox 0 (7 innings)
The AZL Sox were swept in a doubleheader on Tuesday night by the Dodgers. Amado Nunez combined to go 3-7 over the two games to raise his season average to .302. Luis Curbelo went 1-2 with a double and Louis Silverio homered in the losing effort.
