While at SoxFest over last weekend, I was fortunate to get some time with White Sox General Manager Rick Hahn and new Director of Player Development, Chris Getz.
Starting with Hahn, Rick and I talked about the decision point for the pivot to the rebuild, the future positional homes for Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada, some injury recovery updates and how the rebuild will effect timing for prospects in the system…
While most of our readers should be quite familiar with Hahn, they may be less so with Getz, especially in terms of his new role. Chris talked about his career progression in Kansas City from player to front office, that key Michigan connection with his new boss, and his highly individualist outlook on prospect development…

I always enjoy Rick Hahn speak because I believe him to be candid and earnest. However, I was disappointed in the Chris Getz interview. He basically said nothing. His answers were so vague I never got any sense of his style or how he’s going to operate. Getz – It’s important to communicate, the player will ultimately determine when he’s ready, it’s good to challenge them at the next level??? A whole lotta nothin’. I do understand that that giving an interview and doing his job are two very different things. He can be vague and not tell us anything, and yet do a fantastic job in managing the White Sox farm system. But I was hoping for more insight into his vision and how he expects to implement it. I wanted to know what’s going to be different from the way they did things last year. I just didn’t get very much of what I wanted to know.
Chris was actually more direct than many in his role. He was illustrating how he would operate – as an individualist. Instead of system-wide philosophy, he’s more one to focus on each prospect’s own needs. That’s his style. If you listen to what he says, he makes that pretty clear, and that is different than some other folks’ styles.
