Cheers to Winston-Salem, the Carolina League First Half Champs.
The team with too many outfielders secured a postseason berth June 14th. The title is notably the organization’s first since 2012.
The Dash have been phenomenal with manager Omar Vizquel at the helm. As the draft roster churn begins to happen, the team will change. Players will come and go and we’ll see how they look in the second half and ultimately the postseason. Regardless of what happens, securing a first half title is nothing to scoff at and White Sox fans should hold this victory in the highest regard.

With that, here’s what you need to know this week.
Prospect performance highlights
Between Birmingham, Winston-Salem and Kannapolis 18 prospects have been named to their respective organization’s All-Star teams.
Birmingham SS Danny Mendick could be the first Birmingham SS to hit 10 home runs since SS Jason Dellaero did it in 1999.
Birmingham P Spencer Adams promotion to Charlotte had to do something with his sparkling final three starts there. Over 21 innings, he allowed a single run. He continued his stellar streak in Charlotte, throwing seven innings on June 16th. He gave up three hits, three walks and two runs. He struck out no one.
Charlotte P Jordan Stephens threw six shutout innings on June 12th. He gave up three hits and walked two, but still struck out seven.
Kannapolis P Lincoln Henzman was spectacular June 12th. He threw 7 shutout, one-hit innings. He struck out six and walked none.
Charlotte P Donn Roach continues to fight for a plane ticket to Chicago. The 28-year-old journeyman continues to dominate. On June 13, he threw seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk, while striking out nine. (Well deserving of a call-up sometime in 2018.)
The week of the shutout continued when Birmingham P Dane Dunning threw 8 shutout innings on June 14th. He gave up four hits, struck out 10 and walked nobody. C Seby Zavala also went 4-4.
Winston-Salem P Jimmy Lambert may not have thrown a shutout, but he did throw 8 strong, one-run innings June 16th. He gave up 5 hits and a walk, while striking out eight.
Injuries

  • Chicago OF Avisail Garcia was sent to Charlotte for a rehab assignment June 12. He was joined by OF Leury Garcia June 16.
  • Winston-Salem C Daniel Gonzalez was placed on the 7-day disabled list June 11.
  • Kannapolis P Jhoan Quijada was placed on the 7-day disabled list June 16.

  • Charlotte activated 2B Juan Perez from the 7-day disabled list June 14
  • Birmingham P Alec Hansen was activated from the 7-day disabled list June 16
  • Kannapolis activated P Kevin Escorcia from the 7-day disabled list June 16

Team Performances

  • Charlotte posted a 3-3 week (30-38 overall, 7.5 games back). The last place Knights are home for three against Columbus and three against Toledo. Some early rumors (from Barstool Sports) believe OF Eloy Jimenez, P Ian Hamilton and C Seby Zavala could all be on their way to Charlotte, making the rest of the season very interesting (if all three moves happen.)  
  • Birmingham went 3-3 for the week (32-36 overall 1st half, 8 games back). Holding down the cellar into the All-Star break, the last place Barons will play four against Montgomery this week, playing the last two next week. The aforementioned Jimenez continues to hit, with a .317/.368/.556 line.
  • Winston-Salem had a 5-2 week (41-29 overall 1st half, 1st half division winner). The Dash go into the all-star break as the first half division winners. They’ve secured a spot in the playoffs and will open the second half with four at home against Down East.
  • Kannapolis compiled a 2-5 week (39-28 overall 1st half, 1 GB). The second place Intimidators just missed a first half championship. They’ll open the second half with three against Delmarva before starting a series with Greensboro.
  • Great Falls opened their season with a win, before dropping the next two for a 1-2 week (1-2 overall, 1 games back). 3B Lenyn Sosa led the charge on the 15th, going 3-4. He followed it up with another 3-4 performance on the 17th. Great Falls will play three against Billings at home before going on the road for three against Missoula.

    The following players were assigned to Winston-Salem: 3B Romy Gonzalez, OF Ian Dawkins…..I believe these player were assigned to Great Falls not WS
